A Godsend!
By new creation
I saw this book on television and decided to order it. I was struggling with some horrendous health problems and doctors were confused and unable to stop the pain. One medication, led to another, then another and they were still looking at adding more. Upon the books arrival, I immediately looked up my medications and there it was...the begnning of my relief. I began to immediately supplement what one medication had robbed from my body and even was able to get off the medication. I had been struggling with debilitating migraines and headaches for months and the relief was immediate. My pain levels went from a 10 to a 5 within days and are now down to 2's and 3's on a regular basis. I also began working with a doctor who specializes in "Integrated Medicine" and is more than willing to help me with the dosages of needed supplements, etc.

It is my hope to be completely pain free one day soon and this book gives me much needed information to help bring my body to a state of wholeness and healing.
Thank you for writing this book ~ it was a Godsend and an answer to prayer for me!!!

Essential for prescription pill takers!
By Jodi-Hummingbird
The idea for this book is excellent. Cutting down the number of drugs you take is the best idea, but minimising some of the harm of the drugs you do still take just makes sense.

The book starts off by explaining that synthetic chemicals cure nothing and can leave you sicker as they deplete nutrients or make certain nutrients unusable by the body.

There are sections on most of the B vitamins as well as some of the minerals and other vitamins. They were quite detailed and made for interesting reading. A bit of information was included about the best forms of each nutrient which was good, and some brand recommendations were given for each nutrient. More sections including all the B vitamins and the minerals would have made the book a lot better and more complete. The dosages given seemed reasonable for most things and weren't those silly and out of date `2 mg of thiamine' type ones you still get in some recent books.

Newer concepts like the need for activated folate if you have an MTHFR polymorphism were included but in some parts they could have been a bit clearer. The information about how to test for MTHFR seemed out of date as the test is not expensive anymore. Synthetic folic acid is also recommended throughout the book which is no good if you have MTHFR and considering that many have MTHFR issues and do not know it is not ideal. Some good information about the benefits of activated folate was included however, even if it was quite basic. (I just heard a great interview with the author and Dr Ben Lynch, so I assume this issue will be fixed in future books!)

Some sections were a bit unclear on the details. In the CoQ10 section the benefits of ubiquinol (reduced CoQ10) over ubiquinone (CoQ10) were mentioned but then the dosage recommendations given didn't specify which type was being discussed. Later on the author mentions that 50 mg ubiquinol is the equivalent of 100 mg of ubiquinone which is helpful, although the 2x figure is quite different to others I have read (e.g. between 3 and 4x by cardiologist Dr Sinatra.) But even knowing that it's still not clear which form was referred to in the given dosages.

The term folic acid is used interchangeably with 5-MTHF at times and this is incorrect. To say that vitamin C causes kidney stones is also incorrect. Tofu is listed as a source of vitamin B12 but actually B12 experts say that plant foods such as tofu in fact contain B12 analogues which do not give the body any of the B12 it needs and also block the absorption of B12 from other sources. They mimic B12 in some ways but the body can't use them as B12. These foods should actually be avoided if B12 is low.

There is a bit of vegetarian bias in the book which was disappointing. Soy is listed as a food that significantly lowers thyroid hormone levels yet the recommendation is not to avoid soy, but to just take more thyroid hormone. That's pretty bad advice. Soy is not a health food! (See `The Whole Soy Story' book.) Beta carotene is listed as far better and safer to take than preformed vitamin A form animal foods, despite the fact many of us convert beta carotene to vitamin A very poorly. Getting some real vitamin A in foods such as liver is not dangerous and is in fact an extremely healthy choice. Liver is the real superfood.

Agave nectar is mentioned as a safer sweetener (?) and grape seed oil is mentioned as an oil to cook with and protein powders are listed as healthy foods. The nutritional information in this book is not great and the book would have been better if it were all omitted as this seems to be not the authors speciality. Some outdated and wrong information is included.

Probably the worst part is when the author talks about how stupid and mad you'd have to be to eat a high fat diet and so get your arteries `all clogged up' dangerously. The author really needs to do some more recent reading on this topic and why the saturated fat = heart disease hypothesis is junk science. Plus on why low carb or ketogenic diets can be very healthy as well and are in no way `as bad for you' as low fat diets as the author claims. Books like Primal Body, Primal Mind and The Great Cholesterol Con and Know Your Fats and many others explain these facts well.

I most liked the bits of the book where the author talked about the more cutting edge information on the superiority of activated forms of B2, B6 and B12 as well as folate. I took lots of notes. Almost nobody discusses who needs the active forms of each nutrient and why. Few experts even recommend coenzymated vitamins - especially B2. But if you have low thyroid levels, poor digestion, low stomach acid or gut flora issues then taking your B2 in the activated form is actually a very good idea as you may convert the standard form to the active form very poorly. The Thorne products which contain activated forms of the B vitamins were listed too, which is great. More people need to know about those high quality products.

Some of the general information about why drugs wont cure you was also very good, as were the sections on why the RDI of nutrients has nothing to do with the optimum level for each person, how much nutrient needs vary per person and stage of life, and why what is important is the optimum level of a nutrient - not merely the RDI. The RDIs for most nutrients are ridiculously low.

Overall this book is an essential read for anyone taking prescription medications. Hopefully it will help people cut down on drugs a lot and also make it safer to take those few that may remain. The information is not quite comprehensive enough to be a sole source of information about supplements and nutrients but it's a very good start. Recommended reading for anyone taking prescription or OTC drugs daily. 3.5 stars.

Great Book
By Sophie A.
This is a very informative book. I never thought about how prescription drugs work in the system or knew how most cause nutrient losses in our system. We go to the doctor because of this new symptom, and get another pill for it, when it could be that we are low in a certain nutrient. I've taken a stomach acid reducer for years, and often asked the doctor if it was healthy to be on one for so long. He answered there were no indications that it was not. Recently, I've seen commercials for the drug I took with the disclaimer that it may "cause calcium and magnesium deffiencies." Really? I've read this book cover to cover, and still go back to certain sections that apply to me because of prescriptions I take. I've learned a lot about nutrition and supplements. There are so many supplements out there, and quality is very important, and can be expensive. It is very confusing for a newby. I like the fact that the author lists foods that contain the nutrients, as well as supplement dosages and what to look for in a quality supplement if you feel you need the extra support. In my case I felt like I needed supplements because I had been on this med for over 10 years, and had some of the symptoms of nutrient loss. I've found alternatives for the acid reflux med. I know not everyone can or should do that, but so far it has worked for me. As the author suggests, I talked to my doctor and pharmacist about the changes before I made them in case I needed to taper off the drug gradually. The author does caution people to start low and slow if you decide to use supplements as each person is different and may have sensitivities that others do not have. In some cases, supplements work as well as a prescription drug, and you need to be monitored. She lists drug interactions, too, some of which I wasn't aware. That's why I say read thoroughly. I talked about this book so much with my friends that they are now reading it. They say they feel better informed about nutrition and meds, too.

Fresh Guidelines for Fresh Coffee
By Frank
This is an enlightening guidebook to the best practices for roasting. Scott certainly knows roasting and much of this book is geared for the professional roaster. I am not a professional and as a home roaster feel that my Hottop drum roaster offers the minimum specifications to take advantage of most of what Scott is saying. Back to the "enlightening" part, I've only roasted a couple of hundred batches and couldn't really get a handle on the how and why of my roasting process until reading this book. Scott has offered "The Three Commandments of Roasting". I've seen lots of debate about the "Commandments" on HomeBarista.com and many on the forums are put off by Scott's proclamations. Personally, a few foolproof guidelines are just what I needed. It changed my roasting approach dramatically and the truth of what Scott is saying is apparent in my every ristretto.

I believe it has been over 10 years since the last edition of Kenneth David's Home Coffee Roasting. That book and Randy Glass' blog, "Espresso! My Espresso!", have been my primary sources of roasting knowledge. Now Scott's book has moved my comprehension of "third wave" roasting forward.

I'm a Tough Critic
By ACF T.
Lots of good information without *too much* fluff. My big complaint is the two or three times that the author says that something is "outside the scope of this book". With the Davids' book at less than $15 and this one at $45, I don't want to hear that something is outside the scope. I would also like to see more roast curves, and have them accompanied by cupping notes. I am a new professional roaster, and this book has definitely moved my knowledge further, but I wouldn't call it my companion. This book will likely sit on the shelf until we need to hire a new employee. It's still a buy, even though my expectations were not met.

Concise, insightful and well written! Highly Recommend!
By bklavieri
FINALLY a book that delivers concise, insightful technical information for coffee roasters!!! We are a family owned coffee shop/roastery and have been roasting for just over a year now. This book has been an exceptional resource. The author has outlined and written this book in a logical, informative manner. The details in this book are what I have been looking for since we opened our doors. We have hired professional consultants and while that was a smart business move, The Coffee Roaster's Companion answers so many technical questions and has helped reinforce that we, as roasters, are on the right track. Excellent book - highly recommend!

Karaoke Capitalism: Management For Mankind (

"If you loved Funky Business as much as I did, you'll love Karaoke Capitalism. Weird? Most certainly. Different? Most definitely. But, if you want to re-imagine your organization and your career it's a thought-provoking place to start."

                                                                                         Tom Peters

The creators will thrive at the expense of the copycats. Express yourself.

In the long-awaited follow up to their internationally acclaimed Funky Business, Kjell Nordström and Jonas RidderstrSle have delivered a thought-provoking, workout for the wits in Karaoke Capitalism. A book that challenges individuals, businesses and nations to create originals rather than cover versions. Management guru Tom Peters said "If you loved Funky Business as much as I did, you¿ll love Karaoke Capitalism."

The karaoke economy is dominated by individuals with endless choice. The trouble for business is that the karaoke club is also home to institutionalized imitation. Copy-cats abound. Only imagination and innovation place societies, organizations and individuals center-stage.

Karaoke Capitalism is a call to arms. Kjell and Jonas are rebels with a cause. With their unorthodox combination of academic rigor, forceful logic and funky free-thinking they once again re-write the rules for revolutionaries. This is a true work-out for the wits.

The book teaches us how to successfully compete on competencies, create capitalism with character, and how to have a great life while also making a living. It is required reading for all those wanting to be a first-rate version of themselves rather than a second-rate version of someone else.

Karaoke Capitalism - create or cover?

Karaoke Capitalism is a hitchhiker¿s guide to the galaxies of business. and practice is that business schools, benchmarking and best practice have transformed the entire world of commerce into a super-group of karaoke copying companies. And imitating someone else will never get you to the top ¿ merely to the middle.

Our societies are shaped by the glorious trio of technologies, institutions and galaxies of commerce. It is a book about people ¿ management for mankind ¿ the individuals prepared to grasp the microphone and express themselves. You have the rights. Now, you must learn to live them.

The karaoke reality is a cosmopolitan club with endless individual choice but also a paltry place for institutionalized imitation. The dirty little secret of management theory values. Changes have now made abnormal the new normal. The bubble economy has given way to the double economy. Forget about appealing to the average. Success is a question of exploring the extremes.

Corporations are no longer in control. Modern companies are facing the prospects of a two-front war: held hostage by talent and under siege by consumers. The winners know that wealth is created with wisdom, but to remain competitive they are forced

to create knowledge networks that pose new and fundamentally different demands on the organization.

In a world of economic Darwinism, survival is a question of being fit or sexy ¿ competing on models and moods. Fitness boils down to using market imperfections to your advantage. Masters of mood exploit the imperfections of man by seducing or sedating consumer. Excellent companies re-invent innovation and re-energize the corporation.

To develop the character of capitalism we have to accept individual responsibility. Look inside. Do you want to be a first-rate version of yourself or a second-rate version of someone else?

Individualism knows neither immitations nor limitations !!!
By Franco Arda
Again, a wonderful written business book from those two super authors. While the book title might be a bit misleading, it's all about INDIVIDUALITY. It's about experiencing and expressing our individuality in life (mostly through the context of business). Business if floaded with copy-cats. This book is a manifesto against copy-cat business (or karaoke capitalism).

Understanding this is like understanding outsourcing. Executives used to believe that 2+2=5. Now it is 5-2=7 because the more non-core activities you place outside the firm the higher the value you can generate. Funky :-)

Europe Premier Business Thinker write again after FUNKY BUSINESS
By T SANTOSO
I love the writers' different "accent" in the writings, and if you are bored with the many similarity among American Gurus' writing, try this one.

Funky Business is thier first book and i love the book very much. This long awaited sequel has been in Asia ( i bought in spore twice) for sometime and i strangely could not find it in Amazon (untill i check today).... and why it is listed for 50USD is beyond me. (Should be about 15 USD for the soft cover).

The book has nothing to do with Karaoke (singing to the tune of music which is popular in Asia), and this is about business, the rise of the individual, and a host of other things.

I am biased, I love Tom Peters, Seth Godin, and both writers of this book.

The land of the free
By KYMitch
Only four reviews of this remarkable book (with mine). Strikes me as strange that no other Americans have reacted to it. I suppose that says something. It confirmed for me more than it revealed, but for that I'm also grateful. If it's a premise you can understand and follow, it's a gratifying read.

Deviations, by Marc Angélil

A manual that conveys the fundamentals of architectonic design while also providing a novel didactic approach to the presentation of course material: classical design strategies and design conventions are questioned, and unlike conventional textbooks, the individual design steps, from the initial idea to the practical realization of the design, are illustrated by student projects. In addition to the orientation provided within the individual chapters, a graphic navigational structure guides readers through the book as a whole and enables them to scan and home in on individual projects. On analogy with the semesters of an academic year, the book is divided into two main sections, devoted to the thematic areas space, program, technology, context, and form. Each chapter focuses in on a single aspect of architectonic design. Thus, the overall approach is explained step by step.

From the Back Cover
DEVIATIONS, a handbook and users’ guide on architectural design pedagogy, pursues the strategy of the Trojan horse, infiltrating a given system’s practices in order to transform them from within. While documenting the opening moves of the architectural design curriculum at the ETH Zurich, the manual exposes teaching to a series of tests. It promotes a departure from the seemingly familiar and stable grounds of recognized design approaches in pursuit of more open tactics – initiating a plea for a new type of architectural practice. Rather than opposing the established order of things, the approach embraces this order while simultaneously working both with and against manufactured conventions. Taking on the operative mechanisms of everyday practice, median standards, and normative action as the very stuff of design, concepts and techniques emerge whose foci are not based on form, but on how architecture might perform. In addition to the orientation provided within the individual chapters, a graphic navigational structure guides readers through the book as a whole and enables them to scan through the work or focus on specific projects. Following the framework of an academic year, the book is divided into a series of sections devoted to the thematic areas: space, program, technology, context and form. Marc Angélil and Dirk Hebel have taught architectural design at several universities in Europe and the United States. Over the last few years, they have been collaboratively engaged in a didactic experiment reframing the introductory design course at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

About the Author

Marc M. Angélil is professor of design in the Department of Architecture at the ETH Zürich. Dirk Hebel is the senior assistant professor associated with Prof. Angélil s chair; he also teaches at Syracuse University in New York.

For you to decipher
By C. Kim
It is a difficult book to understand, certainly not a book to be called a manual. Perhaps that is the nature of this sort of architectural course recipe, and it reads more like an yearbook of a renowned school than for a reader to learn a few secrets behind the didactics i.e. how to analyze students' works or what criteria should be accompanied with an assignment to give criticism. Going through the Master's program myself, it was a mystery to experience such transformation of mind that I often wish to go back in time to pick up what had been said in the crits, because nothing made much sense back then. Hence, it is of great interest when I see a book of this sort and has to be purchased to see what secrets have been unveiled. However, the book is a disappointment in that sense although it provides with a certain new direction in teaching process oriented architecture not revolving around computer. As the introduction is titled 'Inchoate Deviations', that should be what to expect from this book, personal documentation of several years of academic rigors facing formal issues to be shared with.

A new type of shifter...
By Kiki Clark

Nuts About You by Kate Lowell was an adorable book about a kind of shifter not usually seen in books. This is the first book in her Nutty Romances series.

At under twelve thousand words, this story definitely qualifies as short and sweet. Nathan is so cute as a squirrel shifter even if his spying on Vince may be considered a bit stalkerish. Vince takes it all in stride though, when he realizes the pesky squirrel that’s been eating all his bird seed is the hottie from the Bulk Mart.

You only get a taste of the shifter world that Nathan comes from in this first installment but I have a feeling we’ll find out more as the series continues. Specifically, I’m really interested in finding out how much the different species of shifters associate and how many there are in the community. The world building that goes into paranormal books always fascinates me.

I loved the curses that Nathan used, like “hickory nut” or “oh my walnuts.” Such a small detail but one that really adds depth to this short story.

Nuts About You was a quick and satisfying read and I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for the next story in this series. It offered a new type of shifter, much different than the usual predator types, and I very much enjoyed it.

Cute and fun M/M shifter romance. Also...SQUIRREL!!
By V. Rundell of V's Reads
I breezed through this cute little story that centers on Nathan, a squirrel shifter and workaday cashier at a big box store. Vince has been a regular customer for the past few months, coming in to purchase bags of seed for his many bird feeders. Nathan does a little bit of stalking, and a lot a bit of peeping on his crush.

Crashing out in his squirrel form, munching quality bird seed from Vince's feeders, Nathan revels in the lack of window coverings for Vince's bathroom and bedroom. It certainly feeds all his fantasies...until an irate Vince startles him from his perch and apprehends him!

I really liked the pace here, with little beating about the bush...Nathan and Vince are well on their way to enjoying more adult activity. The elements of squirrelness were adorable, and, as Nathan tells this tale, we get a whole lot of his nutty point of view. Okay, okay, enough with the puns already. This is a short read, perfect for a sexy lunch break.

This was so fun!
By andrew kelley
I really loved this. It was a short story but, while it does lead you hoping for more it doesn't leave you hanging. I can't wait for another one. I love unusual shifter stories and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I watch squirrels in my yard all the time and the author did a great job of capturing the personality of a squirrel and managing to make it human.

“A triumph of storytelling. Henríquez pulls us into the lives of her characters with such mastery that we hang on to them just as fiercely as they hang on to one another and their dreams. This passionate, powerful novel will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

A boy and a girl who fall in love. Two families whose hopes collide with destiny. An extraordinary novel that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American.

Arturo and Alma Rivera have lived their whole lives in Mexico. One day, their beautiful fifteen-year-old daughter, Maribel, sustains a terrible injury, one that casts doubt on whether she’ll ever be the same. And so, leaving all they have behind, the Riveras come to America with a single dream: that in this country of great opportunity and resources, Maribel can get better.

When Mayor Toro, whose family is from Panama, sees Maribel in a Dollar Tree store, it is love at first sight. It’s also the beginning of a friendship between the Rivera and Toro families, whose web of guilt and love and responsibility is at this novel’s core.

Woven into their stories are the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America. Their journeys and their voices will inspire you, surprise you, and break your heart.

Suspenseful, wry and immediate, rich in spirit and humanity, The Book of Unknown Americans is a work of rare force and originality.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2014: Cristina Henríquez’s powerful novel The Book of Unknown Americans captures readers with the quiet beauty of her characters and their profoundly wrought experiences as immigrants in America. The story takes place in a run-down apartment building in Delaware, home to nine families who arrived in the States from various South and Central American countries, each looking to better the lives of the next generation. In alternating chapters, these men and women share stories of how their adopted country has left its mark on them, for better and worse. The close bond that develops between the Rivera and Toro families drives the novel forward, particularly the relationship between their children Mayor and Maribel, as closely held secrets and feelings of guilt, love, hope, and despair are unpacked with warmth and compassion. With her cast of “unknown Americans,” Henriquez has crafted a novel that is inspiring, tragic, brave, and above all, unforgettable. --Seira Wilson

From Booklist
*Starred Review* On a cold, bewildering night, the Riveras, who have just left their happy lives in Mexico, are dropped off at a dilapidated apartment building on the western edge of Delaware. Arturo has given up his thriving construction company to labor in a dark, grimy indoor mushroom farm, while his wife, Alma, lonely and afraid, with no English and little money, worries incessantly about their beautiful 15-year-old daughter, Maribel. She has suffered a traumatic brain injury, and her parents have sacrificed everything to send her to a special school. Their building turns out to be a sanctuary for Central and Latin American immigrants, and as the Riveras’ dramatic tale unfolds, Henríquez brings their generous neighbors forward to tell the compelling stories of why and how they left Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Paraguay. As one man says, “We are the unknown Americans,” those who are feared and hated. As Maribel opens up to Mayor, the infatuated boy next-door who is relentlessly bullied by his father and his classmates, terror of the unknown becomes a tragic force. Each scene, voice, misunderstanding, and alliance is beautifully realized and brimming with feeling in the acclaimed Henríquez’s (The World in Half, 2009) compassionately imagined, gently comedic, and profoundly wrenching novel of big dreams and crushing reality, courageous love and unfathomable heartbreak. --Donna Seaman

Review
“Timely . . . powerful . . . genuinely moving . . . a chronicle of a beautiful Mexican teenager named Maribel Rivera and her admiring friend and neighbor, Mayor Toro. Maribel and Mayor’s star-crossed love lends this novel an emotional urgency; the story of their families gives us a visceral sense of the magnetic allure of America, and the gaps so many immigrants find here between expectations and reality. In slowly revealing the back stories behind [their] arrival in America and what they have at stake in remaining here, Henríquez gives us an intimate understanding of the sense of dislocation they experience almost daily, belonging neither here nor there, caught on the margins of the past and the future. She conveys the homesickness they feel—missing not just family and friends but also the heat and light and rhythms of the places they left behind—and their awareness of the fragility of even their most ordinary dreams of safety. The story encapsulate[s] the promises and perils of the American dream . . . Henríquez’s myriad gifts as a writer shine.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Henríquez distills the vast sea of immigrant stories into a small apartment building community in Delaware. At the center are two star-crossed teens, Mayor and Maribel . . . Through their friendship and budding romance, Mayor becomes a hero, protecting Maribel from a dangerous boy. He starts to bring her out of her shell [and] Maribel begins to reconnect with her former self. Their doomed love is just one of the Romeo & Juliet twists in the book—Henríquez threads that theme through the relationships between parents and their children, husbands and wives, the immigrant community with their home countries and their new one . . . Through her unadorned prose, these struggles ring clear, voices rising above the din of political debate.” —Korina Lopez, USA Today

“Gripping . . . genuinely devastating. Henríquez has found a memorable way to open up complex topics—discrimination, love and grief in family life, and the experiences of being displaced or feeling at home. A novel that can both make you think and break your heart.” —Sarah Stone, San Francisco Chronicle

“Reminiscent of the chorus of voices that made Oscar Lewis’s The Children of Sanchez so memorable, and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things so profoundly humane, Henriquez’s tale about coming to America is a striking original . . . It’s no easy trick to pull a good story from the classic immigrant chronicle, the striver’s tale. But this novel about the Riveras and their hastily cobbled world is sure to bring Henriquez many readers. It is a deeply stirring story about a budding romance between two unlikely lovers, but also a ringing paean to love in general: to the love between man and wife, parent and child, outsider and newcomer, pilgrims and promised land. With a simple, unadorned prose that rises to the level of poetry, Henríquez achieves the seemingly impossible: Without a trace of sentimentality, without an iota of self-indulgence or dogma, she tells us about coming to America. The Book of Unknown Americans leaves you in thrall to its vivid characters and its author’s sure hand.” —Marie Arana, The Washington Post

“In a TED talk titled ‘The Danger of a Single Story,” Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie noted that ‘the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.’ Henríquez’s big-hearted novel challenges the ‘single story’ by exploring a wide range of Latino experiences. The Book of Unknown Americans is a welcome contribution to a broadening literary conversation that features immigrants from all across the Americas, and all walks of life. As Henríquez shows, theirs is a story composed of many stories.” —Ashley Hope Pérez, Texas Observer

“There’s an aura of benevolence in these pages that feels honestly come by, stemming in part from Mayor and Maribel’s innocent romance but mostly from the steady support and encouragement among the families—the charismatic residents of the Redwood Apartments in Delaware. ‘Who comes to the U.S. and ends up in Delaware?’, one [character] jokingly wonders . . . Henríquez’s feat is to make the reader feel at home amid these good, likeable people. Be warned: The price of this closeness is the book’s tragic conclusion.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Textured, resonant . . . rich, human. The Book of Unknown Americans ramps up like a rainstorm then releases across the landscape, and once you look outside, touches absolutely everything. It is a graceful examination of the American immigrant experience from the oft overlooked perspective of the immigrant herself . . . It’s easy to become lost in the young love story, [but] Alma’s parenting checks readers back into the fear and newness inherent in life on unfamiliar turf, with the inability to communicate . . . The novel’s last line is bone-chilling. A secret peek into lives—an unknown life—to which we are not often privy. To walk away without learning something from its pages—most of all, empathy—would be an opportunity squandered. But leave it to the feeling in your chest on your chest when you reach the last page to tell you that.” —Meredith Turits, Bustle (June fiction pick)

“I didn’t want to read another book about the immigrant experience. So ubiquitous in literature, the theme can feel tired and unoriginal, even to those of us who’ve lived it. But the first few paragraphs of Henríquez’s prose—words whose simplicity belies their weight—seduced me with beauty and the promise of a rich tale. And Henríquez delivered. This is a book about love, about how we seek to help those we love, sometimes with unforeseen and tragic consequences . . . Henríquez ignites the tension in the first few pages and lets it simmer and pull the story along . . . Lyrical . . . There is beautiful writing in these pages [that] illustrates the full ethnic range of the Americas and how so many people south of our border ended up here. I’m not spoiling it to say that Henríquez brings the story to a heart-crushing explosion of an end fueled by secrets, love, fear and ethnic tension. Bottom line, if you read only one more book about the immigrant experience, make it this one.” —Beatriz Terrazas, Dallas Morning News

“Observant . . . a bighearted ensemble of a story. Set at a scrappy apartment complex in Delaware, The Book of Unknown Americans is a pan-Latino novel, with characters from Panama, Venezuela, Mexico and Puerto Rico, among other nations. In love and locked out of any reasonably cool social scene in high school, Mayor Toro and Maribel Rivera are the teens at the heart of the novel. Interspersed among their tentative, fumbling love story are chapters devoted to the back stories of the other residents of the complex. Henríquez covers the gamut of the immigrant experience: how they arrived in America, why they came, what they think of their new home, whether they miss their first home. In other words, she captures an experience at the heart of this country’s history that is often a cursory, incomplete story in the media . . . Poor and at the mercy of forces they do not entirely understand, her characters nonetheless experience victories that no one but their families and the fellow residents of their complex share. ‘I hope this book can play a small role in maybe opening Americans a bit more to empathy,’ Henriquez says.” —Claiborne Smith, Kirkus

“Remarkable . . . the narrative of our two central families could easily sustain the novel, but Henríquez has taken it further. The Book of Unknown Americans gives voice to an entire society of people who struggle and work for the hope of better lives—but these lives don't necessarily turn out as they may have dreamed. These people live days steeped in uncertainty and sometimes fear, and the sacrifices that are made in a move toward a better lot in life are huge. Henriquez opens the doors to this experience. Amid the grit and shadows, doubt and desperation, Henríquez finds beauty in community, in love, in family, in perseverance. And lucky us—we have the beauty, too, that is Henríquez’s writing.” —Kristin Fritz, Everyday eBook

“With eloquence, grace and, yes, sorrow, Henríquez creates an ensemble cast that speaks for millions of people who live among us but whose voices are rarely heard. This is a remarkable novel that every American should read.” —Meganne Fabrega, Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Enrapturing and heartbreaking . . . a stunning cross-cultural love story under the guise of a narrative about Latino families trying to make their way in America . . . Like a music master at the harp, Henriquez elegantly plays with human heart strings as she illustrates the complexities of the immigrant experience through the story of two families, as well as the company with whom they surround themselves.” —Morgan Ribera, Bustle

“The stories you hear about immigration are the ones that generate sensational headlines: sheriffs patrolling the border with shotguns, finger-pointing on Fox News, red-hot rhetoric in political campaigns across the country. But as Henríquez was reminded a few years ago, there are plenty of stories that are told rarely, if ever . . . At the center of The Book of Unknown Americans are Arturo and Alma Rivera, who have immigrated legally from Mexico to enroll their daughter in a special-needs school because she has suffered a brain injury. When Mayor Toro, a young naturalized citizen originally from Panama, falls in love with her, the Rivera and Toro families become forever intertwined . . . The Riveras’ vulnerability increases [and] ultimately the story spins toward tragedy. Along the way, Henríquez allows the characters to speak for themselves . . . The politics of immigration, while never explicitly argued, remain subtly in play, as do more existential matters affecting immigrants, such as mixed national and cultural allegiances and affiliations between the generations . . . Henríquez’s most ambitious book yet.” —Kevin Nance, Chicago Tribune

“A novel told in many voices of Latin American people who come to this country and live in one apartment building in Delaware: a book about the love affairs and various things that go on—but it’s really about what it means to be an American, and what it means to have come here—what it cost them and what you get.” —Sara Nelson, on CBS This Morning, Amazon’s “Must-Have Titles for Your Summer Reading List”

“Henríquez’s best yet . . . The notion of home—where we make it, how we define it, and why we leave it—lies at the heart of The Book of Unknown Americans. Gut-wrenching.” —Rachel Bertsche, Chicago Magazine

“Poignant and profound . . . Beautiful, heartbreaking, hopeful and enlightening. Each character in The Book of Unknown Americans tells their story of how they came to America. How much they wanted to become part of this wonderful country with so many opportunities . . . Little did they know that leaving Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Panama, Guatemala or Nicaragua, each with their own unique heritage, food, language and culture, they would all be lumped together as a group of immigrants that were not welcomed or wanted. [But] these strangers soon became friends, something of a newly established family . . . Candid, thoughtful . . . This book had to be written. And needs to be read. A copy should show up on each politician’s desk, teacher’s desk, in each American citizen’s hands.” —Marisa Robinson, The Daily Dosage

“A novel crowded with characters as vivid as they are resilient—families and neighbors who have bravely chosen hope over fate. The Book of Unknown Americans begins with a vivid vision of promise. [But] Hollywood hopes sink like L.A. smog when Alma Rivera, her husband, Arturo, and their daughter wind up in a dingy apartment with found furniture, and Arturo, who owned a construction firm in Mexico, finds work as a mushroom picker. The Riveras come seeking better care for their daughter, Maribel, but they find camaraderie and destiny in their apartment complex, which teems with other immigrant clans—such as the Panamanian Toro family, whose gawky son, Mayor, falls hard for Maribel. Their collective story is interlaced with tales of dreams deferred from the other tenants, [including] a Puerto Rican dancer who could well be a proxy for anyone from far away with an American-size appetite to dream.” —Jennifer Arellano, Elle

“A novel as disturbing as it is beautiful: a testament to the mixed blessings our country offers immigrants, who struggle against bigotry and economic hardship while maintaining just enough hope to keep striving for something better. A narrative mosaic that moves toward a heartrending conclusion.” —Daniel A. Olivas, The Los Angeles Review of Books

“Passionate . . . Henríquez imagines the sweet—and bitter—reality of coming to America, giv[ing] voice to the unheard stories of people who have quit their native countries for what they hope will be a better life. Alternating points of view bring to life nine families living in an apartment building in Delaware who have fled their birthplaces—dusty towns in Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Paraguay—to begin anew in the States . . . The Riveras arrive at dusk, unfolding themselves from the back of a red pickup truck after a days-long journey from Mexico. They are here legally, desperately hoping that an American school will restore their daughter, Maribel, who has suffered a traumatic brain injury, to the outgoing girl she used to be . . . The Toros offer their new neighbors friendship; their son, Mayor, is smitten with Maribel from the moment they meet. As the novel unfolds, the two share a tender love. Through her characters’ fears, their robust affection for one another, and their resilience, Henríquez illuminates the disparity between the lives they’ve given up and the benefits they’ve gained. For some, the struggle to find new identities as Americans yields rewards; for others, the transition is too difficult, and they return home the way they came: ‘out of one world and into the next.’” —Abbe Wright, O, The Oprah Magazine

“Henríquez borrows both the epic scope and the immediacy of oral history in The Book of Unknown Americans, taking readers inside the private anxieties of immigrants—strangers in a strange land. The final crashing together of all the [story’s] forces is devastating, as is the deftness with which Henriquez handles both the dramatic conclusion and the aftershocks. (Yes, I cried.) The book’s structure contributes greatly to the emotional impact: Hearing the stories told in Alma's and Mayor's own voices brings us inextricably close to them. Dividing their tales is a chorus of voices in which other inhabitants of the building tell their stories. The effect is that of both bridge and ballast: the stories enrich the experience with their depictions of the delicate line between heartache and triumph. Henríquez is a world-class stylist.” —Jonathan Messinger, Chicago Reader

“Evoking a profound sense of hope, Henríquez delivers a moving account of those who will do anything to build a future for their children—even if it means confronting the fear and alienation lurking behind the American dream.” —Publishers Weekly

“Distinctively compassionate and original—a moving portrait of people who often pass before our eyes under a veil of invisibility. Gorgeously woven of both hope and delusion, and of the many kinds of love, this is a novel in which characters’ assimilations and aspirations are as much to a new country as to something even broader: to other, finer versions of themselves. As a reader I felt assimilated too, forever altered by the extraordinary world Henríquez creates.” —Heidi Julavits, author of The Vanishings

“Spectacular . . . highly believable and poignant . . . A well-written story set among ‘unknown Americans,’ ostensibly Hispanic but in many ways any family adjusting to a new culture and way of life, regardless of ethnicity.” —Lawrence Olszewski, Library Journal

“Cristina Henríquez has written an exquisite and profound novel of love, longing, and the resilience of the human spirit. Her characters may be invisible souls on the American landscape, but their stories leave an indelible mark on the heart.” —Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove

“The Book of Unknown Americans is filled with the fiercest kinds of love—of a boy for a beautiful girl, of stricken parents for an injured daughter, of an immigrant community for an impossible America. In this powerful novel, Cristina Henríquez gives us unforgettable characters, whose destinies are shaped by forces—senseless, random, political—far beyond their control, and yet whose resilience yields a most profound and unexpected kind of beauty.” —Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being

“Wonderful. If most novels, or at least most good ones, are songs, then The Book of Unknown Americans is a choir. In a multiplicity of voices, each one distinct and authentic, Cristina Henríquez tells a whole community of stories, and the book that emerges is warm, wise, and unfailingly generous. It never seems to strive for profundity or grasp at poignancy, and yet page by page, as naturally as can be, it rouses the conscience and touches the heart.” —Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Brief History of the Dead and The Illumination

“Here is an important story about family, community and identity, told with elegance and compassion. The Book of Unknown Americans is unforgettable.” —Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins

“Some of the characters in The Book of Unknown Americans were born in the United States, others came as adults or were brought here from Central and South America. Their stories speak to us, involve us in their lives. They dream, meet challenges, and dare to live on hope. Sometimes they cry, but they also laugh, dance, make love. In this beautiful book, Cristina Henríquez introduces us to their vibrant lives, to heartbreaking choices, to the tender beginnings of love, and to the humanity in every individual. Unforgettable.” —Esmeralda Santiago, author of When I Was Puerto Rican and Conquistadora

“Cristina Henríquez’s novel is a triumph not just of storytelling, but of American storytelling, a novel whose breadth and power blow open any traditional definition of ‘American.’ Henríquez pulls us into the lives of her characters with such mastery that we hang onto them just as fiercely as they hang onto one another, and their dreams. This passionate, powerful novel will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Important new story about immigrants in America
By Susan Blumberg-Kason
Reminiscent of Jean Kwok's "Girl in Translation", Cristina Henriquez's new novel is a powerful and compelling story of the contemporary American experience. The main characters, Alma, Arturo, and Maribel Rivera, move to Delaware in order to seek special education for teenage Maribel after she suffers a tragic accident in their hometown in Mexico. They move into an apartment building where they meet other Spanish-speaking immigrants from Venezuela to Puerto Rico to Panama, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The families in this story struggle with issues that other Americans never think about: maintaining visa status, finding jobs, feeding their families, fearing racial profiling by the police, and trying to ward off bullies who don't accept them as Americans. The main story centers around Maribel and her friendship with Mayor, a teenage boy in her building.

I love the structure of the story, which is told mainly through the point of view of Alma and Mayor, but also from half a dozen other characters who play more of a supporting role. I found that these different voices just added to the richness of the story.

Although this book is adult literary fiction, it's also a must-read for teenagers and other young adults.

The Failed American Dream
By Jill I. Shtulman
Gosh, it's hard to say anything critical about a novel that focuses on the unknown Americans -- the recent immigrants -- who come to this country with hopes and dreams, only to find that life is not the fairytale they anticipated. It's a worthy topic to read about, especially with the demonizing of immigrants through certain media. And Cristina Henriquez is a fluid writer with an easy-to-read style; she know her craft and she definitely is good at what she does.

The thing is, it just seemed a bit too YA for me. Now, there's nothing wrong with young adult literature. In fact, some of it is quite nuanced (as is this one). But I wanted something more. I wanted an immigrant story such as ones I've read by Junot Diaz, Dinaw Mengestu, or Kiran Desai, to name three. In other words, less a story and more of an explorative journey.

For what it is, this book is good. It focuses mainly on a teenager from Panama, Mayor, who falls in love with Maribel, a brain-damaged 15-year-old whose family hails from Mexico. Punctuating the forward thrust of this star-crossed tale are stories from other Latino immigrants from Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and, in fact, all across Central and Latin America. My one criticism is that there is not a strong differentiation of voices.

Book reviews are personal. I would never discourage anyone from reading this book, which admittedly, is quite good. This is just one person's reaction.

"let us all be from somewhere. Let us tell each other everything we can."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
Maribel's life has been cut short of the promise of her childhood. In traveling to Delaware, her parents are determined to restore all of the promise robbed by an accident one sunny day. They are not the usual people of the American dream, they had loved their life in Mexico. Just so their friends had left Panama under threat, but miss its smells and rhythms.
I love the story of Mayor who sees the person the Mirabel remains and treasures her for her quiet attention to him and his world. Their relationship sets a type of frame for the lives of the families as they attempt to be the best of unknown Americans.

This is a novel of unlovely places made dear by the attention and intent of those who live within them. I find it quiet in scope, but not slow and not picky. Shining moments are let to shine without fanfare or hyperbole. I just really liked the style of this prose. Many moments break your heart, but they are of a piece with life. I find the book a lovely and important look at a corner of the world.
