Great Content but a Brick of a Book

This book is a seminal text--and important for any serious designer or enthusiast to own. Munari is a master. The content is superb and classic. However, combining all three texts into one book has resulted in making what amounts to a hard-to-handle brick. Not to be negative, but one is probably better off purchasing each of the three books individually.

Bruno Munari's wonderfully concise Square, Circle, Triangle is a dedicated case study of the three shapes. This book is perfect for everyone from historians of visual form, to graphic design students all the way up to professional designers and artists. Munari makes parsed connections between the shapes we all see everyday as conveyances in contemporary design (communication, products, architecture), and reaches back into the history of various civilizations in order to uncover archetypes, uses, symbology, significance, meaning and best practices. It's a pleasure to behold Munari's style: his combination of economical writing and visual case study.

Lectures of a much too silent genius

Take care! This is something for physicians or those who know already the basics of quantum physics and just want to read something (almost) original. I know Plancks writing in German and must admit that I have difficulties with an English translation - my deficiencies hopefully and not the translators who should have understood what Planck was talking about. This is always a problem with translations of technical, scientific or philosophic texts. The latter - in face of Planck also being a philosopher - is especially delicate as the German language has many special abstract words in the range of philosophy for which it is difficult to find an English equivalent.
Here a summary of Planck and his ideas in short which you should know before going into the details of the lectures in this book.
The German physician Max Planck is regarded as one of the most important physicians of both the 19th and 20th century. He received the Nobel prize in 1918. His exploring spirit stood in the beginning of Quantum physics.
Similar to his friend Albert Einstein he wanted to explore the basic principles of physics. This can also bee taken from his leitmotiv, which said: Hin zu Gott!" Up to God! Why this? Because he did not believe in a rigid, deterministic causality of all Sein" (of all what is), rather in a "the divine spirit" as "a stream of information, the A and O of all visible and invisible and unreachable things". That attitude of mind is significant in all his lectures.
According to Planck natural science is based on two cornerstones: 1. science gives man the recognition through the five senses and 2. it gives man action, "which is when he expresses his mental attitude, his opinion, his conviction, for which he needs the connection to God. That immediacy brings him clear order, inner firmness and lasting peace for soul and herewith the highest form of human life-quality". You could also say the cornerstones are the capability to recognize the outside "physical" world and the inside "spiritual" world, the latter being the A and O of the first.
Atheist scientist might ridicule this idea, but it were theists like Planck, Born, Pascual Jordan, Nils Bohr and Heisenberg who found the basis for modern physics. And they were all idealists.
Planck made clear in his writings and lectures that physics must bet he most exact science; that physical knowledge is based on measurement of processes which take place in space and time; that therefore one is forced to calculate with different quantities of time and space; that all physical processes can be traced back to the movements of certain elementary particles and that the small numbers, with which this is demonstrated are universal absolute terms and changeless building stones of the scheme of theoretical physics. So to speak they are the building stones of universe.
In all processes of nature universal lawfulness is at work. Planck has the example of the principle of the conservation of energy. He was also making significant contributions to the formulation of the The "Third Law of thermodynamics". Named after him is the "Planck's constant", a physical constant, which proves the principle of the smallest effects. With this constant Planck could prove, that all natural processes can be traced back on volatile processes in the range of elementary particles. Exactly spoken nothing is fixed or determined. This knowledge is recognized in the meantime. Thus Planck became the pioneer and trailblazer for quantum physics.
Starting with the belief that nature is ruled and guided by an almighty reason, by a reason which is at the same time oriented to effect and purpose and existing independent of a thinking mankind, his research brought him to reflections that led to quantum physics. Einstein once said in Planck the ideal of recognition was embodied in a rare perfection.
It is Plancks merit to have realized that empirism cannot be the starting point of scientific thinking. The world as it is can only be understood when the principle of idealism is applied, because only then it can be perceived that the final things are not the final things per se and the obvious datum is not the datum per se. It must be kept in mind that the Whole is more than the single parts.
His speeches and writings are characterized by that idealism. The words he speaks are in our time seldom heard. But they were never disproved. His physical knowledge has stood the test of time and became the foundations of modern physics. Planck saw as well that this knowledge must be of fundamental meaning for the other fields of science. Today with so many different disciplines that specialized and dispersed in development, it would be even more important to recognize this.

Planck's insights into physics are illuminating and breathtaking. His review of statistical thermodynamics makes it appear to be a completely different science that what is taught by the same name today, and he makes it a useful tool.

Fantastic

I devoured this book in one sitting. As a retail pharmacist, I obviously choose a career path where it's easy to forget the clinical impact we can have on our patients. This book gets you excited again. It reminds the reader of the several problems caused by medications and suggests simple solutions. The author reminds pharmacists of the unique lens through which we view healthcare, and he demonstrates how to think clinically and solve problems involving medication management.

The only obvious complaint I see to this read is the way information is presented. Topics, for the most part, are completely out of order. However, I find the lack of organization to be this read's greatest strength. The book is not meant to be a comprehensive review of pharmacotherapy, but rather to provide real world examples that help some individuals (myself included) remember medication "pearls." The brain craves variety, so I find the typical pharmacy read will often lose my interest before I learn anything of significance. With this read, not only does the author have my attention, but the anxiety of returning to the book is greatly reduced when later sections of the book don't depend on information presented earlier. Great job and thank you for providing the pharmaceutical community with this gem!

Book filled with valuable clinical pearls

Sometimes reinforcing old knowledge can be quite boring. This was a quick read that gave real world examples of the interventions pharmacists can make on a daily basis. His insight into his thought process into the medication management of his patients was helpful. I plan on investing in his other products available to help pass the BCPS exam.

Awful for beginners!!!

As a piano teacher I really dislike the way this book is laid out. The progression just makes no sense, and the beginner young kids I teach (all 6 years old) just can't grasp the concepts they throw at you on the first pages. The very first page has them playing C, D, and E, on the staff. I think it's bizarre. I much prefer the Alfred or Bastien books where you learn fingerings, rhythm, and black keys, white keys, THEN the staff. I really wish I hadn't wasted the money on this book. I'll probably use the songs later on in the book when my students learn to play on the staff, but it's just awful for beginners.

My child loves this book and that's what matters

Her teacher has used the John Thompson series to successfully teach piano for decades. Yes, decades. This Primer is so wonderfully sweet with many fun songs to play. My daughter is also very excited about the new books written to go along with it, Teaching Little Fingers to Play Disney Songs, and TLFTP Hymns, Christmas Carols, and there are so many more. There is even a book specific to Jewish songs.

About the numbers...if you actually take time to READ the beginning pages of the book, it gives you a very specific method to ensure that your children begin by playing the proper keys using finger numbers. Then the book explains how to transfer the child to playing the notes only. Basically, just play the song once with the numbers, then play the song from then on SAYING the NOTES while playing the keys. This has worked beautifully for my daughter and she is absolutely NOT relying on the numbering. Really, this book is so likable with fun, familiar songs. Highly, highly recommended.

Also, this is not for "the earliest beginner," really...just so you know, a 5 or 6 year old should start with John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course. That book moves SUPER slowly and gently, introducing all the note names one by one. This book is actually for older beginners (maybe 7 or 8 and older) who can pick things up more quickly.

Valuable updates, continues to be a great resource

Continues to be a great resource for the pharmacotherapy of over-the-counter drugs. A few areas of practice have changed somewhat since the last publication of this book in 2011, among which this book includes are:

• Vaccine information
• Availability of new Advil film-coated tablets, a potentially faster-acting version than standard ibuprofen propionic acid tablets
• Safety labeling changes to PPIs regarding concomitant use with methotrexate sodium for injection
• Inclusion of current pregnancy risk categories for drugs and some natural products, where appropriate
• Inclusion of references for exclusions for self-treatment

There are several other updates as well that are discussed in the book's preface. This book also has the most up-to-date product availability information, whereas the 17th edition includes some products that are no longer recommended or are no longer on the market.

I don't think there is a better reference for OTC care. However, I believe this product and its information may be available electronically. If so, the electronic version would be more practical for real life use. It is definitely worth the money for physicians and pharmacists.
