An excellent supplement
By James Yanni
This book is an excellent supplement to a history or political science textbook; it has 13 short chapters, each with a somewhat detailed look at one specific example of our political system in action. It is quite readable, in addition to being quite informative, and gives a reasonably unbiased look at many aspects of politics in our country. It wouldn't be very useful as a primer or as a primary textbook, but as a supplement, it is excellent.

Where Troy Once Stood: The Mystery of Homer's Iliad & Odyssey Revealed, by Iman Wilkens

From the front flap of this 365 page book: "Like generations of scholars, Iman Wilkens has been intrigued by the origins of Homer's great epic poems about the Trojan War and the adventures of Odysseus - and now believes he has finally tracked down their source. Arguing, convincingly, that the 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey' do not fit the topography, geology, climate, and oceanic tidal patterns of the eastern Mediterranean, Wilkens relocates the Homeric scene in western Europe and the northern Atlantic, revealing the precise of Troy itself and the plain on which the Trojan War was fought. By examining the texts in detail, Wilkens has identified over 400 place-names in western Europe and concludes that the original oral version was composed by Homer several hundred years before it was written down. He reveals that the Trojan War was fought on a far larger scale than previously thought, by Celts from regions as far apart as Scandinavia and Spain, and that the 'Odyssey' provided an oral map for illiterate Celtic seafarers. [This book] is an extraordinary and enlightening journey into prehistory that is as exciting as the voyages of Odysseus. Thanks to Wilkens' patient detective work, many of the most puzzling aspects of Homer's epic poems now fall into place, enabling the reader to understand fully the meaning and significance of Europe's oldest literary masterpieces."

From Publishers Weekly
Wilkens, identified only as a scholar living in Paris, claims that Homer's Iliad and Odyssey do not describe Greek civilization at all. According to his fanciful reading of these texts and of history, the Trojan War was fought between Bronze Age Celts; Troy was in East Anglia, England, not in Asia Minor; and Odysseus plied the Atlantic, with stops in Senegal (Land of the Lotus-Eaters) and Havana, Cuba. Homer, it is claimed here, was a poet from Holland who lived in Spain and France. Maps, photos, tables and comparisons of place names, tides, vegetation, etc., support a flimsy argument. Although at least some elements of his thesis have been advanced as early as 1790, Wilkens plays fast and loose with the evidence.

Fascinating Revisionist View of the Trojan War and the Odyssey
By Jersey Kid
I first came cross a reference to this book in Clive Cussler's `Trojan Odyssey.' At first, I presumed it to be a faux work created by Mr. Cussler, but after a brief search online, I was surprised to find the book does, in fact, exist.

It is Mr. Wilken's contention that neither the Trojan War nor the Odyssey is Greek in origin. Instead, they are events that - wrapped in a somewhat thick coating of legend and allegory - are Celtic tales related to northwest Europe. He states that Homer - in all likelihood an actual person - did not create these two stories out of whole cloth, but rather collected and documented oral histories that were many centuries older. These oral histories were borne to the eastern Mediterranean by a group called the "Sea people' by Mr. Wilkens who were a Celtic subgroup driven out of Europe in a multi-generation Diaspora after their defeat in a war over tin mines in England.

Sound outlandish? It shouldn't because this was the Bronze Age, and bronze is made by alloying copper and tin. And where was the greatest concentration of tin in Europe: England. Other than location, this is the point at which Mr. Wilkens begins his deviation from the Iliad. He believes that the so-called Trojan War was not over Paris running off with Helen, but a banding together of European mainland tribes to destroy the England-based tin cartel. This realpolitik approach does appear more credible than an account of gods helping lovers be together and then choosing sides in a decade long war.

What proof does Mr. Wilkens offer to support his views. It seems that for many hundreds of years there have been questions about the geography in the Izmir area not being similar to the story. The same goes for the weather - described as consistently cool and wet - and the sea - described as having extreme tidal surges. The author catalogues the discrepancies and then presents his theory that the war took place in the Cambridgeshire area of England.

With the Odyssey, Mr. Wilkens is similarly incisive on debunking the idea that 10 years of sailing could occur in the Mediterranean. Again, his view is that the site for the story is the Atlantic ocean as far west as the new world back through the English Channel to the now-Dutch coast. There is, however, a bit of a disclaimer. Mr. Wilken's posits that the story is heavily-allegorical; so much so that I came away with the impression that he was less certain of the volume of truth in the story as compared with the story of the war.

He also strives to support his theories with linguistic comparisons between the Homeric place- and tribal-names and European words. Not being a linguist, I cannot comment on the veracity of his scholarship. Truth be told, I cannot comment on the accuracy of his historic or geographic contentions either. It does seem, however, that the circumstantial evidence is bountiful. The Arthurian legends came to us in the similar manner of oral histories being written down centuries later. And, one only has to briefly come in contact with the Grail legends and their allegorical content to note that what Mr. Wilkens offers is worthy of consideration.

One minor negative note is that it seems to me that English is not the author's first tongue. At times the phrasing is a bit stilted which tends to disrupt the flow of the narrative. A minor point to be sure.

In conclusion, if you are interested in the Trojan War and the Odyssey and found Michael's Wood's `In Search of Troy' at all fascinating, reading this book is a worthwhile proposition.

Oh yes, one more thing: obtaining a copy is a bit of an odyssey in itself. Use an Internet search engine and you will find it. I'm not going to shill for the publisher, so you will have to go for it alone.

Wilkens Really Baked My Noodle
By Laura Knight-Jadczyk
We had just made an international move and were waiting in our new house for our delayed shipping container to arrive with our library. I was quite at loose ends without anything to read when this book arrived in the mail, sent by a friend who knew I was without books. I can tell you that, after reading the cover, if my library had been there, I would never have read it. "Stuff and nonsense!" I snorted! Who was this guy to suggest that Troy was not close to Greece, that all the scholars were wrong?

Well, it's really a good thing I didn't have anything else to read! So many questions answered!

Most people are not aware that not one of forty characteristics of the City of Troy and the Trojan War plain fit the Mediterranean setting. What is astonishing is that the author of the Odyssey does give ALL the information needed to exactly place where Troy Once Stood! For example:

* The Achaeans built 1186 ships for their attack on Troy, they could have travelled the short distance overland far quicker and cheaper if Troy really had been in the Turkish setting.

* Odysseus claimed to have got home by travelling as a passenger on a ship going from Crete to Sidon (present day Saïda in Lebanon), but that is the opposite direction he needed to go in the Mediterranean setting.

* Agamemnon tells us it took him a full month to sail from his kingdom Argos to Ithaca, we know the trip takes less than 24 hours in the Mediterranean setting.

* The mythical location for Troy in Turkey is far too small to accommodate the invading army of about 100,000 men and the long pursuits in horse-drawn chariots.

* The extensively travelled Greek geographer Strabo who lived 2000 years ago (1200 years after the Trojan War) believed that some of the ports of call in the Odyssey should be found in the Atlantic because of the mention of tides that do not really exist in the Mediterranean.

Well, what really baked my noodle was the part about the rivers. Language and how it morphs over time is a particular interest of mine and Wilkens showed that he knew his stuff. The plains near Cambridge and the Gog Magog Hills is a place where more than 12 rivers mentioned in the Iliad can still be recognised by name even today.

Iman Wilkens is not the only one who has suspected that there was something fishy about locating Troy in Turkey. The modern day scholar Professor Sir Moses Finley, emeritus of Ancient History at the University of Cambridge (Fellow of British Academy) after years of study and writing countless renowned books on Greek history, also opined that the weight of evidence made it clear that Troy and the Trojan War did not occur in Greece and Turkey, but some where else. Sir Moses said...

"There has come to be an abundance of empirical evidence that the world Homer wrote about did exist.

"The opinions of later Greeks and 19th Century scholars are irrelevant. We are confronted with this paradox that the more we know, the worse off we are. Homer's Trojan War must be evicted from the history of the Greek Bronze Age..."

In an even older work "Troje lag in Engeland: Odysseus landde in Zeeland" (translated: Troy lay in the United Kingdom: Odysseus landed in the Netherlands) Ernst Gideon followed the work of the 18th and 19th century Belgium authors De Grave and Cailleux, who took pains to show that Troy was located in England and that the Odyssey took place in the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel.

Like Iman Wilkens, Ernst Gideon realized that the ocean Homer wrote about is wide, wild and dangerous, never smooth and sunny, the color was grey and never blue, and such an ocean could not have been the Mediterranean sea.

In short, the weight of the EVIDENCE makes it quite clear that Troy and the Trojan War did not occur in Greece and Turkey (as we know it today), but some where else.

It also raises many unanswered questions that Wilkens does not deal with. For example, we know that the land we now call "Egypt" was never called by that name until the time of the Greeks. It is very possible that a far more ancient Egypt, located elsewhere, was the legendary home of the great mysteries and "spiritual knowledge" referred to in myths and legend. And if that is the case, it turns philosophy on it's head.

In a very real sense, finding that the original Egypt was in France restores to Western Civilization its true heritage, displacing the unnatural Fascist, Asiatic monotheism brought to us courtesy of Judaism.

Iman Wilkens discusses the Celts and their culture as well. We are taught almost nothing about the Celts in school, though they seem to be considered as the ancestors of most Europeans, thus also Americans. The question we need to be asking is: Why is it that the religion and culture of the Mesopotamian region dominates our lives and our culture when it is, in effect, "foreign"?

The lack of written texts by the Celts has been the greatest problem for historians and students of the Celts. A lot of ideas are "supposed" or ancient sources with agendas have been relied on, and some of them even propose that there was a "taboo" by the Celts on putting things into writing.

Iman Wilkens idea of why the Celts didn't write things down is one of the flaws of the book. He suggests that this was how the Druids kept their power.

But, if we look at what Caesar said was that the reason for the ban on writing, we find that it was really quite logical. The Druids were concerned that their pupils should not neglect the training of their memories, i.e. the Frontal Cortex, by relying on written texts.

It is worth noting that, in the nineteenth century, it was observed that the illiterate Yugoslav bards, who were able to recite interminable poems, actually lost their ability to memorize once they had learned to rely on reading and writing.

So, it seems that the Druids were actually concerned more about the accurate transmission of their knowledge than "holding power."

Although the Druids prohibited certain things from being written down, it's clear that they DID write. Celtic writings in Ogamic script have been found on many ancient stones. Caesar tells us that the Celts were using the Greek alphabet when the Romans arrived in Gaul in the first century BC.

The destruction of Celtic culture was so complete that we know very little about their religion. We do know that they celebrated their "rites" in forests and by lakes without erecting any covered temples or statues of divinities.

Plato had doubts about the Greek origins of Homer's work because not only do the physical descriptions in his poems not correspond to the Greek world, but also the Homeric philosophy is very different from the mainstream Greek philosophy we know about today.

Aristotle considered Gaul to be the "teacher" of Greece and the Druids to be the "inventors of philosophy." The Greeks also considered the Druids to be the world's greatest scholars, and whose mathematical knowledge was the source of Pythagoras` information.

What we can discern from Wilken's work is that there was an ancient and noble civilization associated with the Megaliths that no longer exists and even its high knowledge and nuanced philosophy has been forgotten - except for the Iliad and Odyssey.

Iman Wilkens restores to us a fragment of True European History and perhaps it is time for us to turn our attention to trying to learn more about it in the proper context. After all, Judao-Christianity has brought the world to the verge of total destruction in less than 2000 years. The Celtic cultures existed for many, many thousands of years, accomplishing great feats of engineering and producing a culture that was pre-eminent throughout the world until they were destroyed by the monotheistic infection - due mainly to the fact that they did not accept a single, monolithic authority.

Iman Wilkens book is filled with rich details and piles of supporting evidence that includes ancient historic writings, accurate geographic and topographic description matching, detailed maps, countless archaeological finds, historic place name matching, cultural and linguistic evidence.

This book is a MUST read for everyone, most particularly people of European and Mediterranean heritage.

Intriguing Theory Undermined by Poor Presentation
By Matthew Ries
The historicity of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey is the basis of Iman Wilken’s “Where Troy Once Stood”. The author’s theory that the Trojan War took place in England between Celts is both an intriguing revisionist theory as well as good material for authors looking for a good story.

The basic premise of the book is Wilken first rejecting the concise opinion that Troy as located in Anatolia, evening using ancient sources to help support his conclusion. Though Wilken’s believes the Trojan War did take place and examined Homer’s text to find Troy’s location, both by descriptions and etymology to find Troy in the Gog Magog Hills in Cambridgeshire, England. Wilken’s then places gives locations for all the combatants listed in the Iliad amongst the Celtic peoples of Western Europe from Scandinavia down to southern Spain. Based off his locations of the Iliad, Wilken’s catalogues Odysseus’ journey around the shores of Western European and throughout the Atlantic before arriving home in Spain. However, Wilken’s proposes that the Odyssey was not only a story of a warrior king, but a map for Celtic seafarers to sail for recourses in Africa and the Caribbean as well as tool for initiates into the ‘Mysteries’ of the Celtic Druids.

While this overall theory based on Homer’s epic poems is though-provoking, the overall book is undermined by how Wilken presents his material. Whatever one thinks of the theory this is a hard book to read because there is no flow from point-to-point throughout the text. Wilken’s enthusiasm for his theory is identifiable in the text mainly because he likes to insert conclusions and further theories randomly whenever something that is connected with them is presented in the text. After long periods of logical progression, Wilkens would started jumping from point-to-point before taking up his logical process again then incorporating the random points he talked about earlier into the narrative. Wilken’s never fully explains some of his conclusions or provides supporting evidence for some of his assertions, his view of who the Phoenicians were was the biggest in my mind. Finally Wilkens presents numerous maps and lists of his etymology evidence as part of his main text instead of as a large appendix, which makes the last quarter of the book a slog.

In the end the reader must judge Wilken’s theory for themselves and as stated in my introductory paragraph, it provides good story material like Clive Cussler’s “Trojan Odyssey”. However anyone who wants to read this book for either the revisionist theory or for story inspiration should keep in mind the book’s winding journey. Wilken’s published a revised edition of “Where Troy Once Stood” and maybe that edition (2009) presents the material better, however based on the chapter listings I’m doubtful. So if you’re interested in reading this book, you’ve been warned.

The reason why, by Cecil Blanche Fitz Gerald Woodham Smith

Nothing in British campaign history has ever equalled the tragic farce that was the Charge of the Light Brigade. In this fascinating study, Cecil Woodham-Smith shows that responsibility for the fatal mismanagement of the affair rested with the Earls of Cardigan and Lucan, brothers-in-law and sworn enemies for more than thirty years. In revealing the combination of pride and obstinacy that was to prove so fatal, the author gives us a picture of a vanished world, in which heroism and military glory guaranteed an immortality impossible in a more cynical age.

One of the Great Books on how the British fought Crimean War "Charge of the Light Brigade"
By J. Holloway
Many a historian rate this as a must read book. Written in the early 1900's it is still being published and read to this day. It is the story of the Charge of the Light Birgade. If you are into British History this is a must read. I read the book over 30 years ago when a college friend recommended it. I ordered it on Amazon a year ago to re-read it, then gave it to a friend lived in Scotland and who is into history. He in turn sent it to his son who makes a living playing bagpipes in Colorado. The book gets into the British psychic, and how command was purchased not always deserved. The battles of the Crimean War have amazed scholars and casual readers alike. The book deals with how the British Office thought and carried out orders as well as details on the battles themselves.

All the Reasons Why
By Jim Muccio
"The Reason Why" by Cecil Woodham-Smith and written in 1954 came as a recommendation through a friend of mine who is currently a major in the British Army. My familiarity with the Charge of the Light Brigade, which occurred during the British, French, and Turkish campaign against the Russians during the Crimean War up until reading this book was lifted from visual snippets from my childhood when my dad would watch the 1936 Hollywood production with Errol Flynn, by the same name, but taking place during the wrong war for the wrong reasons with all the wrong characters, and the often quoted Tennyson poem from which the title originates.

"Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred"

I'm glad I read this book and straightened out my truly twisted sense of British history on this one. I also learned a great deal more. This book is a masterpiece and I will feebly attempt to explain why. To understand what really happened during the Battle of Balaclava, Woodham-Smith starts to illustrate the political and military culture within Britain starting just after the turn of the Century and then directly after the British victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. It is very important to understand that British officers did not attend formal professional military schools nor did they move up through the ranks, they bought their commissions and either learned in the field, engaged in self-study if they were interested in subjects such as warfare, or they lead and managed men based on instinct. Officership was entrusted to and required of only the upper social strata -- those who had a stake in the country were those best fit to lead the military, and more importantly were those less likely to turn the military against the social elite, themselves. This was how the stability of the British aristocracy was balanced and maintained -- in peacetime it works -- the military is not going to over-throw the country. During times of war -- it also works since the military with it's sabre now unsheathed, is typically sent abroad. When sound military leaders emerge and victories are secured, the system is self ratifying. When defeats occur abroad, however, the facts can be easily distorted to hide the incompetence of the officer elite and then too the system ratifies itself, or the aristocracy quietly takes care of it's own. The reason why, not the title but the reason the Light Brigade trotted ceremoniously, not galloped, into the valley of death had everything to do with why the British system of officership was a failure and must be changed.

The book is a masterpiece because it combines the domestic sagas of a Jane Austen novel complete with social circles, sex-scandals, and racial prejudices into a great discription of the reality of a military campaign in progress. Not just from the tactical descriptions of the battles as they were set-up and ensued but the logistics of supporting the infantry and the cavalry to get to those battles. After she describes in great detail the unlikely British victory at the Battle of Alma she quotes the Duke of Wellington who said, "Next to a battle lost, there is nothing more dreadful than a battle won", and from her descriptions of the pain and human suffering inflicted on both sides, the Duke was right. Yet Woodham-Smith adds even more to this book, the pure high drama of military incompetence at it's highest as Lord Raglan unwitting observes a battle unfold from his perch deep behind Russian, the enemy, lines. And of Lord Lucan, who want's to be in charge but is never in the right place at the right time. And to the Charge itself, when Captain Edward Nolan, who carried the charge order to Lord Cardigan, and who in a moment of his own clarity, the coup d'oeil that he himself had written about in the calvary manuals he had penned, gallops to the front of the charge to correct Cardigan's fatal misinterpretation of the charge and is ironically cut down by canon fire just before being able to divert the Light Brigade's direction away from the valley of death. High drama, ferocious battle, scandal, intrigue, incompetence, and an outcome that would forever change the way we train our military officers. A must read for every member of the military -- grunt to general officer, for every history buff, and for those who just like to poke fun at the British way of doing business or to understand why it is they do business their way.

Great read for anyone inetrested in 19th century Brittish History and/or military history in general
By Carl D. Todd
Great book. This work illuminates a world during the first half of 19th Britain and of Ireland as well. Plus, it does exactly what the title says - it explains the reasons why the charge of the light brigade was made. But, you will learn a lot more about the main people involved, their lives and personalities. This is indeed a wonderful story very well told.

or run these people off public lands because of their own fears that these arriving immigrants could only extend bad conditions
By Rick
Enticing from beginning to end. The trials and tribulations of these people and, how they suffered in order to feed their families while living in squalor, under inhumane conditions, being deliberately driven into continually worsening situations in an attempt to make them give up their own homes. It was eye-opening to see the fear of those people already living out west and how they used to humiliate, beat, kill, or run these people off public lands because of their own fears that these arriving immigrants could only extend bad conditions on them on 'their' own lands. Those in California were starting to believe the propaganda that these Oakie's were bad people looking to do harm, steal food, trespass and take jobs at their next destinations. Truth is they were not greedy, or out to harm anyone else, all they wanted was a fair chance to raise their families in peace and, without the pains of starvation, in lands with ample fruit and, meat that in many cases went to waste due shear meanness by the owner of these products. Their tenacity was incredible as they continued to move on in an attempt to save the themselves, their familes and, friend's from starvation, illness, and, homelessness by moving them all to these strange lands in the west with the empty promise of unlimited work for all; this belief died as quickly as it came about for those that started their long trek's to these new promised lands as they would discover along the way. This alone would have been enough to stop most families in their tracks but, not the Joad's............they continued to race toward a dream that was truly a nightmare even after being warned several times that there would not be any work there. These people were tricked and/or forced into giving up their lives by 'them', & 'they', never knowing who 'them' and 'they' really were. Were 'they' the land owners, the banks, the government.....................it seems that the leaders of this farming movement were very successful by keeping them living in ignorance as these scoundrels stole their lives out from under them...............they were helpless until the point of anger. There stories are much more coarse than those of today but...............there are still the 'they's' and 'them's' out there today that control our everyday lives...........we're not really sure who they are but we follow them..........their modern handbills are the media who continue to lead us astray many times. I found this story of history to be intriguing and even more so I was surprised how closely it still resembles the society we live in today in so many ways. Great book.

Of Mice and Men is beautiful in its simplicity and concision while painting vivid scenes ...
By Kathryn T.
Of Mice and Men is beautiful in its simplicity and concision while painting vivid scenes and directly touching on human thought and emotion. George and Lennie, the protagonists, evolve and depend on each other as they navigate through the lonely world. George acts as a father figure to Lennie, who retains a childish innocence while possessing incredible strength. Recognizing the danger of the two characteristics combined, George seeks to protect Lennie, and does so by not only saving him from the dangers of real life, but also defending him against the darkness of hopelessness. However, in the end, George realizes that he cannot forever protect Lennie, as he can only do so much to shield Lennie from reality.

I know that I am sure to be limited in my understanding of this book, but from what I understand, I love it. I especially love how the characters are so well developed - even Curley's wife, who, does not have a name not because Steinbeck disregarded her, but because she is a femme fatale figure who, despite being a 'tart' woman and therefore being supposedly inferior in status to men, is able to have such a great impact on the whole of the story. And it's so interesting that the man who falls into her femme fatale trap isn't ensnared by her beauty or sexuality, but simply because of his childish obsession with touching soft things.

So as a high school student who was “forced” to read this (it was on the summer reading list), I highly recommend this book.

the book represents what is great in American literature
By JoEllen Bellerive
The review is from Paul Bellerive - he is the reader of Grapes of Wrath

The book is a classic that still reverberates in the America of 2015. Although most Americans do not want to admit it, the themes of the book are still relevant today. The excesses of greed and capitalism continue to plague our nation, and perhaps by reading the Grapes of Wrath modern Americans will be moved to confront some of the problems inherent in our economic and political systems.

The novel is pure Steinbeck - stark, clear, and unflinching. Although some today may have difficulty persevering through a long novel, the book represents what is great in American literature. It is impossible to conceive of a reader who is not moved by this extraordinary story. A must read.

New Series
By Richard C. Hayes
Tasha was 13 years old and hiding in a forest, waiting for her father, when she is attacked by the largest wolf she had ever seen. As she laid there waiting to die she is picked up by 2 men and transported to the Facility, where she has been held for 8 years when;
Jack, an old vampire has allowed himself to be captured to gain entrance to the facility meets Tasha when she is brought to him for him to feed. He finds out that not only is she a telepath but also a werewolf, a fact she denies as she has never changed even though the people at the facility has been trying to make her do so. They develop a bond and when he hears her being tortured he orders his men to raid the facility and he rescues her and takes her to meet Sebastian, the head of the local werewolf pack.
The story goes on as they try to find out who and what she is, who ordered her attacked and why and are there others like her.
This book, if it had been longer and developed the characters better would had received 5 stars instead of 4 as it was interesting and gripping and made me want to know much more about each person and what was happening. Maybe in the next book of the series. We will have to wait and see.

NOTE: I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

3-1/2 Stars, Pretty decent fast read
By jcat
Which was mostly the problem, it was too short.

A longer story would have allowed more prior background and more character development. I'm not a big fan of novellas, I'd much rather sit down and read a full length book that satisfies me. That being said, it really wasn't bad as far as it went, and has an acceptable ending that will lead smoothly to the next installment.

Tasha is not a bad heroine if one takes into account her lack of worldly experience due to her incarceration. Jack the Vamp is the suitably sexy love interest, although Sebastian the Werewolf appears to be a fine future contender to round out a potential love triangle.

Spicy sex scenes, not for the young ones. Nothing really too unusual with the Telepath/Vampire/Werewolf scenario, but still nicely presented.

Quick and easy read.

Great Story! I wish it were longer.
By Amazon Customer
I loved the heroine. She was spunky and not afraid to speak her mind even if it caused her trouble. Jack could have used a little more description as could Sebastian for that matter. The book was left without a clear ending so I am assuming there will be more. I hope so. I would really like to read more about these characters and get a little more back story on them and on the organization that held them hostage. The author has a very good writing style. The story kept my interest until the end. A very pleasant surprise for a free book.

ONE

The day it all started—a hot, August Saturday—I’d gotten off work a little after twelve. My name is Tom Wallace; I work in Publications at the North American Aircraft plant in Inglewood, California. We were living in Hawthorne, renting a two-bedroom tract house owned by one of our next-door neighbors, Mildred Sentas. Another neighbor, Frank Wanamaker, and I usually drove to and from the plant together, alternating cars. But Frank didn’t like Saturday work and had managed to beg off that particular day. So I drove home alone.
As I turned onto Tulley Street, I saw the ‘51 Mercury coupe parked in front of our house and knew that Anne’s brother, Philip, was visiting. He was a psychology major at the University of California in Berkeley and he sometimes drove down to L.A. for weekends. This was the first time he’d been to our new place; we’d only moved in two months before.
I nosed the Ford into the driveway and braked it in front of the garage. Across the street Frank Wanamaker’s wife, Elizabeth, was sitting on their lawn pulling up weeds. She smiled faintly at me and raised one white-gloved hand. I waved to her as I got out of the car and started for the porch. As I went up its two steps I saw Elizabeth struggle to her feet and adjust her maternity smock. The baby was due in about three months. It was the Wanamaker’s first in seven years of marriage.
When I opened the front door and went into the living room, I saw Phil sitting at the kitchen table, a bottle of Coca-Cola in front of him. He was about twenty, tall and lean, his darkish-brown hair crew-cut. He glanced in at me and grinned.
“Hi, brother man,” he said.
“Hi.” I took off my suit coat and hung it in the front closet. Anne met me in the kitchen doorway with a smile and a kiss.
“How’s the little mother?” I asked, patting her stomach.
“Gross,” she said.
I chuckled and kissed her again.
“As they say,” I said, “hot enough for you?”
“Don’t even talk about it,” she answered.
“Okay.”
“Hungry?” she asked.
“Ravenous.”
“Good. Phil and I were just about to start.”
“Be right with you.” I washed my hands and sat down across from Phil, eyeing his blindingly green polo shirt.
“What’s that for,” I asked, “warning off aircraft?”
“Glows in the dark,” he said.
“Helps the co-eds keep track of you at night,” I said. Phil grinned.
“Now don’t you two get started again,” Anne said, putting a dish of cold cuts on the table.
“Whatever does you mean?” Phil said to her.
“Never mind now,” she said. “I don’t want any needling session this weekend. It’s too hot.”
“Agreed,” said Phil, “needling excluded. Agreed, brother man?”
“And spoil my weekend?” I said.
“Never mind,” said Anne. “I can’t face that and the heat both.”
“Where’s Richard?” I asked.
“Playing in the backyard with Candy.” Anne sat down beside me with a groan. “There’s a load off my feet,” she said.
I patted her hand and we started eating.
“Speaking of Candy,” Anne said, “I trust you haven’t forgotten the party tonight at Elsie’s.”
“Oh my God,” I said, “I did forget. Do we have to go?”
Anne shrugged. “She invited us a week ago. That was excuse time. It’s too late now.”
“Confusion.” I bit into my ham on rye.
“Brother man seems less than joyous,” Phil said. “Elsie’s shindigs no goo’?”
“No goo’,” I said.
“Who is she?”
“Our next-door neighbor,” Anne told him. “Candy’s her little girl.”
“And parties are her profession,” I said. “She’s the poor man’s Elsa Maxwell.”
Anne smiled and shook her head. “Poor Elsie,” she said. “If she only knew what awful things we say behind her back.”
“Dull, huh?” said Phil.
“Why talk?” I said. “Go to the party with us and see for yourself.”
“I’ll liven ‘er up,” said Phil.
* * *
A little after eight-fifteen Richard fell asleep in his crib and we went next door to Elsie’s house. In most marriages you think of a couple’s home as theirs. Not so with that house. Ron may have made the payments on it but the ownership was strictly Elsie’s. You felt it.
It was Ron who answered our knock. He was twenty-four, a couple of years older than Elsie, a couple of inches taller. He was slightly built, sandy-haired with a round, boyish face that seldom lost its impassive set; even when he smiled as he did then, the ends of his mouth curling up slightly.
“Come in,” he said in his quiet, polite voice.
Frank and Elizabeth were already there, Elizabeth settled on the red sofa like a diffident patient in a dentist’s waiting room, Frank’s thin body slouched in one of the red arm chairs. He brightened only a little when we came in, raising his bored gaze from the green rug, straightening up in the chair, then standing. I introduced Phil around.
“Hi!”
I glanced over and saw Elsie peering around the corner of the kitchen doorway. She’d cut her dark hair still shorter and bobbed it still tighter, I noticed. When we’d moved into the neighborhood, she’d had long, drabby blond hair.
We all said hello to her and she disappeared a moment, then came into the room with a tray of drinks in her hands. She was wearing a red, netlike dress which clung tightly to the curves of her plump body. When she bent over to put the tray down on the blondwood coffee table, the bosom of the dress slipped away from her tight, black brassiere. I noticed Frank’s pointed stare, then Elsie straightened up with a brassy, hostesslike smile and looked at Phil. Anne introduced them.
“Hel-lo,” Elsie said. “I’m so glad you could come.” She looked at us. “Well,” she said, “name your poison.”
What happened that evening up to the point when it all began is not important. There were the usual peregrinations to the kitchen and the bathroom; the usual breaking up and re-gathering of small groups—the women, the men, Frank, Phil and myself, Elizabeth and Anne, Elsie and Phil, Ron and me—and so on; the drifting knots of conversation that take place at any get-together.
There was record music and a little sporadic attempt at dancing. There was Candy stumbling into the living room, blinking and numb with only half-broken sleep; being tucked back into her bed. There were the expected personality displays—Frank, cynical and bored; Elizabeth, quietly radiant in her pregnancy; Phil, amusing and quick; Ron, mute and affable; Anne, soft-spoken and casual; Elsie, bouncing and strainedly vivacious.
One bit of conversation I remember: I was just about to go next door to check on Richard when Elsie said something about our getting a baby-sitter.
“It doesn’t matter when you just go next door like this,” she said, “but you do have to get out once in a while.” Once in a while, to Elsie, meant an average of four nights a week.
“We’d like to,” Anne said, “but we just haven’t been able to find one.”
“Try ours,” said Elsie. “She’s a nice kid and real reliable.”
That was when I left and checked on Richard—and had one of my many n

One of his best; different from the movie
By Craig Clarke
This is another terrific thriller from Richard Matheson. When the film version came out a few years ago, it was instantly dismissed as a rip-off of The Sixth Sense -- a difficult feat considering that the novel that was the source of the film was written over forty years prior. As a fan of the film (it is highly underrated and will definitely provide entertainment for fans of the genre), and of Richard Matheson's work, I felt I owed it to myself to check out the original: A Stir of Echoes (What, a definite article is good enough for The Sixth Sense, but not for Stir of Echoes? I'll never understand Hollywood).
When Tom Wallace is hypnotized at a party by his brother-in-law, he turns out to be a surprisingly good subject. Afterwards, he is told how malleable he was, and a good laugh is had at his expense when he unwittingly performs a post-hypnotic suggestion. But afterwards things aren't the same for Tom: he begins having dreams that a woman in black is in his house, and then realizes that he is able to read people's minds. This comes in handy on more than one occasion, but generally appears to be a nuisance, especially to Tom's wife, Anne, who wants him to see a doctor.
Given what I have read of Matheson, I wasn't surprised by the level of quality presented in the story. What did surprise me, however, was that A Stir of Echoes, although first published in 1958, is not at all dated; it could have just as easily been written today, Matheson's story and characters are so "modern" and timeless. This is particularly true given the modern atmosphere of being more accepting to the idea of spirits "crossing over" from another plane.
As the story progresses, the tension ratchets higher and higher. Matheson hardly lets up, steadily adding more complications to the plot until the surprise revelation. This is one of the reasons that I like Matheson's work so much: the knowledge that I am always in for a ride.
(Fans of the movie please note: the plot of A Stir of Echoes differs from the film in many details. The base story is, of course, the same, but the identities of the participants -- the alleged ghost, the alleged killer -- are different, which allows for a novel experience in reading a book you think you're already familiar with.)

A PLEA FROM THE GRAVE WILL NOT BE DENIED...
By lawyeraau
Although not one of Matheson's best efforts, it nevertheless makes for a page turning, good read. Written nearly half a century ago, the book still has a contemporary feel to it. There are just a few issues which remind one how long ago it was written. Its central themes, however, are as fresh today, as when the book was first published.

The main character in the book is Tom Wallace, a working stiff with a house and family, who goes to a local gathering of friends and family. There he allows himself to be hypnotized by a relative who is an amateur hypnotist. A doubting Thomas, he agrees to undergo hypnosis in the belief that he would not be susceptible to it. Much to his chagrin and the amusement of others, he is, indeed, put under. Shortly after coming out of his trance, he finds that life, as he knew it, had irrevocably changed.

What he had thought was a cheap parlor trick, turned out to be the catalyst that changed his immediate reality. His existence began to be punctuated by visions, telepathic intrusions, psychic impressions, and other paranormal experiences. The effect that this has on him, his life, and those whom he loves is what gives the book its substance.

It is this altered reality, however, that makes his new life more meaningful than the one he had been leading prior to his being hypnotized. The book barrels on to a climactic ending, as events from the past intrude on the present, demanding a resolution. The realization that things or people are not always what they seem is brought home here with great impact.

Do yourself a favor, read the book and skip the movie. They bear little resemblance to one another.

Almost as fresh as the day it was written
By A Customer
While "Stir Of Echoes" is not as emotionally compelling as Matheson's classics "I Am Legend" or "What Dreams May Come," this is still one hell of a good read. It's a tribute to Matheson's skill as a writer that this novel is almost as fresh as the day it was written - there are only two or three items throughout the entire book that might give away the fact that it was penned over four decades ago. The "horror" in this novel will probably be as discomfitting as a hangnail for fans of the in-your-face "slice & dice" gore of a Clive Barker or a Robert McCammon. "Stir Of Echoes" doesn't rely on a steadily rising body count to draw you along - it keeps your interest by demonstrating just how fragile "normality" can be. Not just among your friends and neighbors, but also within your own family, within your own mind. The increasing sense of isolation in the main character, Tom Wallace, is what drives "Stir Of Echoes". This fast-paced novel is a very pleasant diversion for a Saturday afternoon at the beach or an evening at home.
