Saul Bellow (1915–2005) is the author of nearly twenty works of literature, including Seize the Day, The Adventures of Augie March, The Victim, Herzog, and Humboldt’s Gift. He taught at the University of Chicago and Boston University. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976.

Adam Kirsch is a senior editor at the New Republic and a columnist for the Tablet. He lives in New York City.

Henderson the Rain King

This is the BEST book I've read in ages. I found it so thoroughly engaging, I couldn't put it down! Eugene Henderson, a great (often) drunken oaf of a man--rich, somewhat crass, a man who does not suffer fools gladly and makes life for his wives and children difficult--chafes at the restraints of a sophisticated, civilized existence in New York and makes his way into Africa. Once there, all his innate qualities--sheer strength, his instincts, rashness,while drawbacks in an artifical social world--serve him well in the natural world. He encounters princes, kings and hired guides, who he treats with equal respect. Africa gives him an arena to test himself, quench his thirst for an answer to the internal (and for him, eternal) question that eludes him throughout his life: I want, I want, I want. Through his journey, he finds out what he really wants to do with the rest of his life and comes out of this adventure with a greater sense of who he really is. Saul Bellow makes Henderson and his experiences so real, the reader feels as though he or she is there, seeing it all through Henderson's eyes. I think this book is a gem, a completely entertaining read.

What Makes Life Meaningful?

Gene Henderson, a 50-something millionaire living in 1950s America, decides to take a trip to Africa to try to quiet the voice inside him that keeps saying "I want, I want." Since Henderson already has everything material he could want, he can't find any way to satisfy that voice, and he has already tried several other things prior to his African trip. I'm not sure what Bellow intended, but as I read it, Henderson represents America - huge, crude, often well-meaning but causing destruction nevertheless. Bellow's imaginary Africa would then be the entire developing world - or even the whole world outside America. It's hard to like Henderson at first; even his own first-person narration casts him in a bad light. As his attempts to help the people in the first tribe he meets end in catastrophe, he seems to represent the American ignorance and arrogance that led to so many disastrous overseas projects in the 1950s and 1960s. Subdued by his first failure, Henderson allows himself to learn from the second tribe, and although he ultimately barely escapes with his life, he comes away with the inner peace he had sought, with a new wisdom, and with a determination to become a healer. The message seems pretty obvious.
An alternative way to read it makes Henderson representative of anyone who no longer has to work for a living and who searches for something to give life meaning. This should resonate with any young dot com millionaire as much as with any healthy retired person. Either way, the book reads smoothly and moves along briskly. Read it long enough to get past your initial dislike of Henderson, and it will reward your efforts.

Hooray for humanity

The title character of Saul Bellow's "Henderson the Rain King" is one of the most remarkable personalities in modern literature. Most first-person narrators just kind of lay on the page, passively hoping the reader will sympathize with or care about them; but Eugene Henderson is a three-dimensional creation, arrogant, energetic, restless, engaging the reader with his lively banter and gleeful impudence.
55-year-old Henderson is a millionaire by inheritance, aimlessly sleepwalking through life, married to a ditzy wife, and channeling ancestral spirits by playing his dead father's violin. Needing a vacation from his family and his dreary normal existence, and feeling that "...it's the destiny of [his] generation of Americans to go out in the world and try to find the wisdom of life," he travels to Africa and impulsively decides to go off into the wild.
A hired guide named Romilayu leads him to two remote villages. The first is inhabited by a tribe called the Arnewi. He observes with delight that the Arnewi village must be older than the city of Ur -- this is what he was looking for, the cradle of civilization, unblemished by the advances of modern society. Here he finds the natives in a crisis: their precious cattle are dying of thirst because the water in the village cistern is undrinkable. On his own initiative, he tries to solve their problem; but his plan fails disastrously, and he and Romilayu leave the village in shame.
They go to a second village, inhabited by a larger tribe called the Wariri, ruled by a king named Dahfu. The Wariri are suffering from a drought and go through elaborate rituals in order to conjure rain. When Henderson unexpectedly helps them bring a deluge, Dahfu proclaims him the "Rain King" and the two become close, almost brotherly, friends. Henderson learns that Dahfu cannot have complete sovereignty over the tribe until he captures the lion containing the soul of his dead father, the former king, and Dahfu asks Henderson to help him in the hunt. But human corruption knows no geographical boundaries, and Henderson and Romilayu soon find themselves in a dangerous situation from which it will require all their physical and mental capacities to save themselves.
More refined and terser than "The Adventures of Augie March," "Henderson the Rain King" offers a wonderfully balanced mixture of philosophy, suspense, and humor. While Augie wandered through life looking for a purpose, a goal, Henderson seems to find his, affirming it through his own adventures and taking the reader along for the exhilarating ride. You'll be cheering for the guy, not because he's the hero, but because he's more human than most of the people you know.

This book gives readers a systematic look at theprocessof child psychology by examining the twenty most revolutionary scientific investigations in the field over the course of the last fifty years. The individual chapters are dedicated to each revolutionary study and derived from empirical data and scientific methodology.A four-part organization examines studies that revolutionized cognitive and language development, social development and parenting, clinical child psychology, and how we think about child psychology.For those with a professional or personal interest in child and human development.

I don't claim to have any special knowledge of how the field of child psychology operates. I'm just an average Joe trying to make a living doing what child psychologists do. One of the most important things they do is read the work of other child psychologists. Over the two decades or so that I've been reading these works, I've developed a fairly comprehensive classification scheme for what I think are the most important research topics, who are the most influential child psychologists, and which are the most revolutionary scientific publications. In fact, I've gotten to the point that whenever I read the work of another child psychologist, the second thing I do is look over the References section (the first thing I do is read the title and abstract). The reason I turn to the references first is that I believe I can get a good sense of the tone, the purpose, and the outcome of the article, just by seeing who gets cited in it. My predictions are usually right on target.

But about 5 years ago, I began to wonder whether other child psychologists had developed their own mental classification schemes, and whether their schemes were similar to mine. For example, I wondered whether other researchers considered the works of Robert Fantz and Renée Baillargeon as revolutionary as I believed they were. So in the summer of 2000, I launched a major research project of my own in an attempt to uncover the major child psychology research projects published in the second half of the 20th century. I asked child psychologists from all walks of life to nominate and vote on the studies they believed were the Most Important, Most Revolutionary, Most Controversial, and Most Fascinating. This book describes the 20 Most Revolutionary Studies.

The project was a major undertaking, and I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the contributions of a number of generous individuals. I must first acknowledge the overwhelming effort put forth by Debbie Hoffman. Deb was involved in this project every step of the way; she pulled names from the Membership Registry of the Society for Research in Child Development, typed up mailing labels, taped gold coins to individual recruitment letters, helped tally the results, and reviewed my entire book for typos and grammatical errors. I am extremely grateful to her. Thanks also go to Chuck Moon, who helped me come up with the research design for the data collection portion of the project. A Must Read. Moving, Affecting, and Thought-Provoking

Decades ago, physicians were taught to keep their emotions separate from the doctor - patient relationship. The fear was that the physician's judgment could be affected and the patient could suffer profound ramifications. Years ago, Dr. Jerome Groopman wrote a best-selling book, "How Doctors Think." It opened the eyes of millions of readers to the psyche of the physician and how an individual doctor's thought processes affect the care of the patient. Now, physician / author Danielle Ofri has written "What Doctors Feel." I've spent the last few days reading it, and would give it my highest recommendation.

I first came across Dr. Ofri's writing with her seminal memoir about medical school, "Singular Intimacies." It is one of the books that inspired me to become a writer as well. With her most recent book, Dr. Ofri's writing has matured, like the physician she has become. The subjects she tackles are large, important, and impactful, especially in today's fractured medical climate. How does the fear of lawsuits affect a doctor's job performance? What about insurance issues? I found parts of the book deeply affecting, and believe that her gift of writing shines through greatest in these.

I highly recommend this book for anyone in the health profession, and especially for college students aspiring to enter the field of medicine. It should be considered for medical school curriculums as well. Five stars.

Must-Read for Medical Students

I needed this book. After finishing a surgery clerkship, I was at the lowest place I had been all year. A friend told me at the beginning of the rotation to keep a copy of my personal statement in my pocket, because at times, I would forget why I had chosen to enter medicine. I didn't take his advice, but recognize now that I did become that detached and disillusioned. Thankfully, the combination of a family medicine rotation and having this book to read when patients "would rather not see a medical student" has served the same purpose - if anything, I understand better than ever why I am doing this.

I chose to pursue medicine after realizing that I needed more emotional attachment to the people, and the cause, that I wanted to work for. We talk a lot about `hidden curriculum' in medical school, but I'd take it a step further and say your book discusses the `neglected curriculum' of medical school. I'm almost done with my first year on the wards now, and am familiar enough with patient care to identify with all the `feelings' assigned as chapter titles. Countless times, I've wondered how residents and attendings deal with difficult patient deaths, the joy of successful treatment, medical errors, the reprimanding that takes place during M&M, litigation, etc. All we have to learn from are the behaviors our supervisors respond to these situations with, and so much is left unspoken on account of being `resilient.'

I can't thank Dr. Ofri enough for her willingness to be vulnerable and brutally honest. I greatly appreciated the work she did to present different perspectives on each emotion, with many of the stories not having classic `happy endings.' An appeal of medicine is to work in an environment that challenges you at your emotional, ethical, and philosophical core, as much as it does intellectually. But while so much time is spent developing our intellect amidst emotional challenges, you're essentially left on your own to process experiences and develop coping skills. While there are attempts to create a space for reflection in a `doctoring' course, discussions among peers are limited in value compared to hearing from the professionals we aspire to become. This book provides invaluable insight to students.

Fantastic and captivating

Absolutely loved this book, you can connect with the characters and you feel like you are there in the midst of the turmoil and just want to reach in and help.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what the next book is going to be about, with an ending like this there had better be another one.

Kudos to Bridget Essex for another fantastic book, her talent for telling stories that seem like real life is incredible. Looking forward to more book from her :)

Delightful and thrilling!

Bridget Essex is a favorite author of mine, and I think this is her best work yet. Date Knight is a delightful whirlwind of humor, passion, suspense, love, and a deep sense of wonder. Holly, a librarian, is navigating her relationship with her new girlfriend, Virago -- a knight from Agrotera, another world apart from Earth. In this sequel to Essex's A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER, Virago and Holly are called back to Agrotera to protect the queen, but not before Virago's fellow knights visit Boston to pick her up and create a load of hilarious, rollicking trouble.

I consider the plot of DATE KNIGHT to be pretty much perfect in form: what seems like a straightforward concept (protect the queen from assassination) is deepened by creative details, vibrant characters, twists, and description that absolutely scintillated. The characters were so lively and well thought out (I adore Queen Calla -- she's so very well-developed, so strong and complex, where many authors might make the mistake of letting a symbolic figure like a queen become flat). The landscape of Agrotera and Arktos City was crystal clear in my mind. The whole novel had a sense of wonder, of huge scale, that drew me through page after page. I wanted to start over and read it again once I finished.

An outstanding magical love story!

I won't give spoilers but I will say this novel is outstanding and is woven with many fantasy elements, magic, adventures and love. The setting is beautiful, written with vivid details that brings you in the story. My favorite knight is Virago, an exotic strong confident woman. She needs to protect her lover, her queen and her country of Arktos. Her Arktos, a captivating magical world dominated by women, and the queen are under threat of being conquered by evil. But she doesn't have to do it alone. Along with her friends, a bunch of truly stunning knights, she goes into battle. There were so many moments that I had my heart in my throat, that I could feel the fear of Holly and of all the others.It's so well written you can easily picture everything in your mind. You'll find yourself immersed in the characters and you will fall in love with Holly. She is a warm, compassionate loving woman. The romance between Virago and Holly tugged at my heartstrings. This is what is called, true love. Date Knight is a fantastic novel that never disappointed. I highly recommend Date Knight and the first one, A Knight to remember.

Basic, easy to read introduction to the state governemnt and politics. Provides a solid foundation to understanding the current state of politics and how we arrived at this point. Information is providing in interesting and relevant fashion, and is up-to-date with current politics (updated post-recall campaign).

A Great Primer on California's System

Having not grown up in California I was always a little in the dark as to how things operated in this State. However, when I picked this book up as part of a Political Science class I found myself much better off.

The book is short, which is really a good thing. Yeah, the author could have droned on about the minute detail of every aspect of California's government and political system, but she didn't. Rather, she laid out, in a concise fashion, an explanation of the governmental and political system in California that gives a person enough knowledge to understand what is going on around them and to make well informed decisions at the ballot box.

I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to be able to spend just a couple hours to understand the California system. This is also a great reference book to keep in the house.

You won't be disappointed.

Best text for refinery process engineering --- not saying much

Oddly, only one reference book proved adequate, in my opinion, in explaining refinery science: "William Leffler's "Petroleum Refining." The others, including "Petroleum Refining, Technology and Economics," by James Gary, Glenn Handwerk, and Mark Kaiser, "Refining Processes Handbook," by Surinder Parkash, and even the venerable "Petroleum Processing Handbook," by Bland and Davidson. Leffler wins out because his process descriptions are fairly detailed compared to the others while balancing a need to be understood by the non-technically educated. Where this text, by Gary, Handwerk, and Kaiser fails is its lack of detailed process design information.

For example, I was somewhat disappointed in the section on hydrotreating. This process involves removal of nitrogen and sulfur and alkylation of alkenes, phenols and benzenes from a feed of gas oils recovered from a pipestill. Tables provided showed the expected performance for the catalyst beds; some discussion was presented of the differences between fixed bed reactors and moving bed reactors. Only scant information was provided on reactor design. Even though it might have risked going into detail about a particular catalyst at the expense of others there was no exploration beyond mere statements of information such as hydrogen consumption and space velocity requirements. A good example of the failure to provide detail design information is the authors' reluctance to provide hydrogen consumption information in section 9.5.

Instead, the reader is referred to a monograph written by W.L. Nelson in 1971 for the Oil and Gas Journal. Why not present the data?

This situation highlights the primary problem with this text and the others: a lack of process design information. This book would have to grow by another hundred pages to meet his ambitions goal of providing a good reference for petroleum refining. Only Leffler meets this goal ¯ and, he does it without the science and engineering required in the other references.

Unless you want incomplete details on the subject of petroleum refining, buy Leffler, not this text. However, of the others, this is a good reference book for the subject. Be prepared to fill in the copious quantities of gaps in information. Maybe, you should buy Leffler and this text.

Excellent overview

I am an investment analyst and used this book to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry. I found it to be clear, well organized, and containing all the info I needed to understand the dynamics driving the business and the lingo. There was more engineering and scientific info than I needed for my purposes, but it was useful to thumb through those chapters to get a high level understanding of the issues. Highly recommended for people new to the industry.
