Recommendation from someone who actually does it rather than talks

Great Book- for a supplemental ,comprehensive view I recommend DANCING IN THE STREETS- Erhenreich, THE SOUNDSCAPE- Schaefer and THE TAO OF MUSIC- Oritz too. I've performed in Bavarian Schuplattler/Oktoberfest groups fopr over 15 yrs and used to be one of the top Polka dancers around.

The book also includes a list of tools used and says that the scroll saw and tablesaw are the two most often used. There is even a short history of the game and basic rules of play.

One thing most chess players can agree on - chess pieces and their boards are a thing of beauty. In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. As an avid chess player and/or a scroll sawyer you will really appreciate this book.

About the Author
Jim Kape has been working with wood since childhood. One of his chess sets took a First Place Blue Ribbon at the 2009 Excellence in Woodworking show sponsored by the Arizona Association of Fine Woodworkers. Another of his set designs won a county and state fair award in Utah.

Making Wooden Chess sets

I ordered this book for my husband who does all the scroll sawing in the house because he had seen in a magazine a pattern for a chess set. He decided he wanted to try making one for himself, but the set in the magazine was a little more difficult for his level of expertise, so he wanted to try a simpler one. When we got the book, very speedy shipping by the way, he immeadiately went to town cutting some pieces out. He found the instructions with many pictures VERY helpful in learning how to cut the compound cuts needed to make each piece. Needless to say, he had made his own chess set in a couple of weeks and is now working on several more! I would definately recommend this book to someone who is interesterd in learning a new technique on the scroll saw.

I found this book to be excellent. The paterns are complex and the hints for the builder are also good. Building the chess pieces,however, is not at all easy when using one and a half inch wood.

Jim Kape is a fantastic designer and Artist , and this book is very well written .
Ive been wanting a quality chess set for some time , but good sets are like 3-4 hundred
with a wood board - I believe I can make a simalar quality set with board using this book .

Scholars and fans of the great mythologist will find a rich vein of information in Humphrey Carpenter's The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien was a prodigious letter writer all his life; the sheer mass of his correspondence would give pause to even the most stalwart archivist (one shudders to think what he would have done with e-mail). But with the able assistance of Tolkien's son Christopher and a healthy dose of determination, Carpenter manages find the cream of the crop--the letters that shed light on Tolkien's thoughts about his academic and literary work, as well as those that show his more private side, revealing a loving husband, a playful friend, and a doting father. The most fascinating letters are, of course, those in which he discusses Middle-Earth, and Carpenter offers plenty of those to choose from. Tolkien discussed the minutia of his legend--sometimes at great length--with friends, publishers, and even fans who wrote to him with questions. These letters offer significant insights into how he went about creating the peoples and languages of Middle-Earth.

I have long ceased to invent (though even patronizing or sneering critics on the side praise my 'inventions'): I wait till I seem to know what really happened. Or till it writes itself. Thus, though I knew for years that Frodo would run into a tree-adventure somewhere far down the Great River, I had no recollection of inventing Ents. I came at last to the point, and wrote the 'Treebeard' chapter without any recollection of any previous thought: just as it is now. And then I saw that, of course, it had not happened to Frodo at all.

This new edition of letters has an extensive index, and Carpenter has included a brief blurb at the beginning of each letter to explain who the correspondent was and what was being discussed. Still, we strongly recommend buying the companion volume, J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, in order to better understand the place these correspondents had in Tolkien's life and get a better context for the letters. --Perry M. Atterberry

I've never been interested to read an author's personal correspondence. It's always seemed invasive and "prying," and of questionable value in locating and understanding the real sources of an author's muse. In this case though, and on the strength of other reviews, I bought the book, and am delighted to have taken the risk. It's just plain fascinating to follow the development of Tolkien's writings in his own words and thoughts, trials and setbacks, set amid all the same criteria of his larger life. An incredible read, really. Humphrey Carpenter, Tolkien's biographer, compiled this collection of personal correspondence with tact and great sensitivity and respect for J.R.R.T., and also a bulls-eye sensibility for what possible readers might find of interest.

On the Kindle version, though, 1 star at best. Typos or scan errors, whichever they are, are everywhere, and egregious. It's obvious that this Kindle text was never proofed by a human editor. To find the word "orc" misspelled as "ore" four times on one page is proof enough that the publishers put very little care into preparing the text. There are many, many other errors just in the first twenty percent of the book. I am very tempted to return this Kindle version for refund and go for the hardcopy, instead.

Especially at this time, when publishers and authors are clamoring for higher prices and consideration for their electronic books, I find myself more than ever inclined to just go back to hard-copy reading. It may be that the paper version of "The Letters..." contains the same quantity of really inexcusable errors, but that doesn't justify the glaring lack of editorial care in this Kindle version. These firms are obviously paying much, much less to produce the books, and yet still demanding to be paid even more, unfortunately actualizing Tolkien's own vision of the "machine" and where it was headed in his day.

If you are a Tolkien fan, you will love it.

Basically, if you are interested enough in Tolkien to be reading this review, just go ahead and buy this book. You will not regret it. I've read one of his biographies, which I thought was interesting, but this is way better and more worthwhile. Because here you get to experience Tolkien's own writing. Many of the letters shed light on the process of bringing about his work, but many of them also explain the works themselves. There is a lot of guessing going on out there about what Tolkien was thinking when he wrote his Middle Earth works. Well here we have it in his own hand. If you enjoy the humor and creativity in his books, you will enjoy it here also.
Also, if you're debating between the kindle edition and the book, I was very glad I got the kindle edition because Tolkien has a much more expansive vocabulary than I do and it was convenient to just highlight the word and see the definition.

A must for any fan of Tolkien's

This is the book I recommend when someone has read and loved Lord of the Rings and wonders what they should read next. These letters provide some of Tolkien's thinking behind the story and world of LOTR (and his other writings) but they also provide a glimpse into the man himself. The nature of the book... a collection of letters... makes it easy to pick up and put down and one can read the letters out of order. It has an index so one can quickly find letters that deal with certain characters, places, events, etc. It's easy and enjoyable reading and I think every fan of Tolkien's writing will enjoy this book.

About the Author
Erik Yuzwa (Calgary, AB) has been a professional computer programmer for over seven years since he graduated from University of Calgary in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. In 1995 he joined Wazoo Enterprises, Inc. and is now Lead Game Programmer/Designer. In 2001, he added Game Programming Educator to his schedule in which he instructs the game development process at the University of Calgary Continuing Education.

Avoid This Book

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start out in game programming. I am a grad student engineer and have been programming for over 5 years. I just recently got into game and graphics programming and this book is really terrible compared to some others I've seen. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the chapter on graphics mathematics is fairly complete, and the book provides a good high level picture of how a game is structured. However, the code specifics are downright horrible, the listings seem to be randomly thrown in without any clue as to where they should go in an actual program, the writing is boring, the directions are sparse and inchoerent, and much of the source code provided on the CD is incredibly difficult to get running (if it runs at all). Also, there is a discussion board on wazoo, but don't excpect much help. Many of the forums end with unanswered questions including many that I had. For an intro book to programming games, save your money for another book, because this book just isn't worth the cost in wasted time and money.

Fairly good

Overall, the book is fairly useful. However, it lacks several things:

1. Contains many snippets of code that cannot be determined where they go

2. Constantly uses forward-slashes (/) instead of backslashes (\) for filenames (even if outside of code).

3. Does not justify certain variable names; ie a local variable one would normally call "fontSize", he calls "m_pFontSize".

4. What exactly is something such as a "PNFGLGETQUERYOBJECTIVEARBPROC"? He uses types like this alot, but never says what they are (even in the introduction to OpenGL).

Frustration

I saw the Thomson logo at the top left on the front cover and thought it was textbook quality. I was dead wrong!! As the engineer said, the directions are incoherent and you don't even know when he has given instructions or just an example. I had to search the web for help answers just to do the "Hello World" application. There is no troubleshooting guide in case you get stuck. If you get stuck you better clear up your schedule cause you will be searching for answers for a while. Why not spend that time and buy a good book on programming. I would expect more from a programmer than this garbled mess of words.

Excellent book.A bit soiled on some pages but I suppose that's to be expected with a used auto repair manual.Very good pictures and detailed instructions.It arrived quickly. Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.

IT is a very good manual but not up to the calibre of bentleys other manuals. Some things are hardly covered at all for example the carburetor system or scirocco wiring for different models.
