James C. Gerdeen, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center and a distinguished professor at Michigan Technological University. He has published over 65 papers and over 100 research reports. His research interests include pressure vessel design, structural analysis, metal working manufacturing, and mechanical design.

The shinny parts of this book:
1. It covers broad range of ESL topics in pretty much technical depth. By reading it you get decent knowledge of ESL.
2. The writing style is clear, concise and easy to read. Code examples are easy to follow, rich of diagrams are helpful for reader to grasp importance concepts.

The grey (not dark) sides of this book:
1. It is time for second edition to cover new ESL trends, tools and methodologies such as low power profiling, thermal analysis, open source virtual platforms, Synopsys PA/Virtualizer, Cadence VSP, OVP, etc.
2. Give a real example of how ESL technology helps to boost SW/HW productivity from project management view, and how ESL works with Scrum, Agile, XP, ect. The example should be drawn from a major semiconductor company such as Qualcomm, nVidia, etc.
3. Cover more embedded software development scenarios, such as booting Android, real-time OS, etc.
4. Discuss more types of IP model architecture, such as NoC, multi-media, storage and networking.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.
 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

Unique Scientific Study

from the perspective of an ecologist interested in komodo monitors thsi book provides both interesting stories and a comprehensive scientific overview of the species. if you are interested in komodo monitors or you plan on doing research involving the lizards, auffenberg's book is the bible you need to read. auffenberg's study is especially good at

(1) describing the macro- and microhabitats of the komodo monitor

(2) habitat usage by monitors

(3) cataloguing the prey eaten by monitors and foraging patterns

(4) general behavior and communication between monitors

and (4) quantifying competition between monitors and other predators and cannibalism of young lizards by older adults.

auffenberg's study provides qualitative data that is ultimately not supported quantitatively on:

(1) reproductive behavior

(2) cognition and intelligence

(3) home range and migration/emigration patterns between populations

(4) habitat preference (as opposed to WHAT habitats they choose, WHY they choose each and WHICH do they prefer first)

(5) community ecology involving monitors

many of the issues with auffenberg's book are purely scientific in nature - while his study provides a solid foundation for hypothesis generation and future research, it does not give quantitative answers to many questions behavioral ecologists have. because it was the first major study done on komodo monitors, in fact one of the first major behavioral studies done on any lizard, many questions are unanswered or left unaddressed. auffenberg's later publications show an improvement in methodology (1988, 1991), but nevertheless "the behavioral ecology of the komodo monitor" is a priceless resource for any person conducting research on komodo monitors. any publication that deals with komodo monitors is sure to cite "auffenberg (1981)."

from a lay perspective, auffenberg's book is an enjoyable, if sometimes dry, read. auffenberg's passion for these animals shows through his scientific writing, which is clear and straightforward. auffenberg doesn't often use scientific jargon when compared to other scientists, but he still requires patience while reading (especially his sections on skull kinetics).

i personally love auffenberg's book because i feel that while presenting very ground-breaking, interesting, and still useful information on one of the most interesting organisms on the planet, he captures a psuedo-scientific charm about komodo monitors that can almost be described as cultural. his writing is aware of its shortcomings but at the same time captures a wordless quality about an organism so different that science can only begin to describe it. perhaps this is my bias as a scientist, but i found auffenberg's book very inspiring for both science and elsewhere.

if you are interested in learning more about komodo monitors you should look at "komodo dragons: biology and conservation," which is a smithstonian press publication. auffenberg's study was conducted during a period in ecolog that has been replaced more than once by developing trends in the field. while modern ecology certainly has its flaws, it is much more holistic and multidisciplinary. "komodo dragons" (2002) includes much more information on higher end cognition, metapopulation dynamics, and conservation biology. there are many different indonesian ecologists who conduct research on komodo monitors presently, but the majority of the modern publications accessible to nonindonesians are published by claudio ciofi and tim jessop.

A perfect piece of work

This book is not a novel. It is a detailed description of almost all aspects of the Ora (the Komodo inhabitant's name for the Komodo monitor), not permitting the some anatomical details of the monitor. As the title implies, the Ora's behavior is magnified greatly. The book is a leading authority on the behavioral aspects of the book. Morphology, grow analysis, predator-prey coactions, and ecology information is also included and is very complete and well recorded (as is everything in the book). This is a must have for any person interested in this lizard, but is serious reading.

A superb monograph, mixing hard science with great reading.

Perhaps biased by a fascination for really large lizards, I was enthralled by this book. Walter Auffenberg, wife, kids, and various others spent almost a year on Komodo Island in 1970 doing the first comprehensive study of Komodo Dragons. The depth is awesome, everything from detailed morphology to studies of prey species to inventories of flora. Mixed in with the tables and charts are wonderful accounts of sharing a photo blind with an 8-foot lizard looking for shade, and how to measure a Dragon's maximum speed (chase him with a motorcycle). Sixty dollars and well worth it

Dated, but Highly Informative

This is a great book about the history of the diamond trade and the state that it was in back in the early late 70s and Early 80s. However, that was 30 years ago, and Epstein hasn't done a great job of keep up with the industry.

I bought this book on the strength of it's mention on the first TrueTV episode of Adams Ruins Everything, where had Epstein featured on it. And I don't regret the purchase at all. Epstein takes an in-depth look at several De Beers diamond mines, the distribution of the diamond in London, and the ways De Beers held onto it's diamond monopoly. It's great look at how controlling supply and demand from the top down is essential to maintaining high prices. It also takes a look at 20th Century ad campaigns that helped make the diamond industry what it is.

It's only problem is that the book was written in the early 80s and makes it sound like the diamond industry is still like this, and it's not. Rather, it shows the beginning of what the diamond industry is today. It talks about antitrust litigation by the DOJ, but the resolution (with De Beers settling the lawsuit) doesn't happen until years after the book with published. The book also discusses competition by the Soviets, completion that only increased in the years since publication.

And that's the thing, De Beers had a monopoly back when the book was published. It doesn't now. The diamond monopoly has been replaced with a cartel, and while the goals of a cartel are the same as a monopoly, the means are very different. For example, the idea of "blood diamonds" comes from the cartel trying to keep people from buying diamonds from native mining operations and channel all sales through the cartel. So, while the book is very informative, you won't come away from an accurate picture of what the diamond industry is like right now.

If you know of book that does discuss the diamond cartel of the 2010s, I'd love to hear of it.

Diamonds are not a girls best friend.

My fiancee hates this book.
It tells the story of the propaganda of the diamond industry and how there is no shortage of diamonds. The worst part?
Your diamonds are worth nothing after purchase.
Don't believe me?
Do as the book suggests. Make a trip to a few jewelry stores under the pretense(Act Serious)of selling your diamonds and see how little,if any,money you are offered.

If you get any where near purchase price(85to90%)write a reply to this review and tell me where the jewelry store is.

DeBeers' Unveiling

This book knocks the legs out of the diamond industry. What appears elegant and elite turns out to be a down and dirty industry, selling tainted, overpriced products. And they've maintained a monopoly during generations of anti-trust measures!
This book is very readable and very entertaining. I wrote a report on the subject for a MBA class which got great reviews. I'm inclined to think it was as much for the shocking truths which were revealed as much as my superior writing skills! I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever considered purchasing a diamond.

Good classroom compendium

Alhough the topic of U.S. political leadership and masculinity appears in various sources, this is the one book I like to use in my "Gender and Political Communication" course (besides my own book) that summarizes much of the topic of the gendered presidency. It will happen one day. Just give it time!

This book was published before the 2008 election. It speaks about the challenges and victories that shape whether the US will have a female president. I liked its evaluations and diverse chapter topics.
In women's studies classes, they emphasize that gender and sex are different concepts. The authors in this book try to spell out that both being women and the status of the presidency seen as a masculine job hurts women's chances. The book says sexism would have to decrease in this country, but also that citizens would have to be more comfortable of women in "masculine" jobs for there to be a female president. Many news articles have said it's not a question of if, but when the US gets a female president, and this book does not veer from that point.
To me, the latter chapters were easier to read than the former ones. After a while, this book became of Who's Who of Women in the Legislature and Executive branches. A poli. sci. major could get a quick brush-up on women in politics here.
The work speaks of Geena Davis' show and how art could open the door to life. None of the researchers are psychics, but some of them do hint, "There's some guy named Obama who seems to be in the wings." This book pays a lot of attention to Hillary Clinton as it should. Still, the authors could not have predicted that she'd become Secretary of State and get some background in this "masculine" job.
I have two critiques of the emphasized women here. The book sometimes hints, "If not Hillary, then Condi Rice." It does admit that Condi never said she would run for the job. However, I am incredibly skeptical that Black conservatives who get appointed to positions can get elected to them. I'm not convinced that Far Right voters would embrace her; I'm an African American and I'd really say I can't imagine my community leaving its favored party and voting for Condi. Lord knows I wouldn't have. Chald, Claire Huxtable could get elected President before Condi Rice could. This work used Louisiana's Governor Blanco as an example of sexism against female leaders. It suggests Rudolph Giuliani was praised around 911 when she was condemned around Katrina. Sorry, but I heard both women and men, in Louisiana and outside of it, say Blanco did a poor job in that crisis. Painting her as a victim was not plausible to me.
This book becomes more dated each day, but I thought it was a strong text.

Timely and Well-Written

What a great anthology. This book brings together some of the great minds of legislative, presidential, media, and gender studies within Political Science. My favourite piece by far was Georgia Duerst-Lahti's. She is witty and intelligent and this comes across in her detailed analysis about the newscoverage of the candidates and the prefernece for masculinity or more masculine terms.

Kim Fridkin's essay on the media is also illuminating. I've looked at my copy of the book and it's dog eared in each chapter. There is something for everyone. The chapter about executive leadership is also useful with the historical breakdown of women leaders.

Overall a great read. The book could be read by a lay audience or an academic audience. I'll definitely use some sections in my summer course (American Politics) and other courses.
