After 18 weeks, the subjects lost an average of 16.4 percent of their body weight—up to 44 pounds!
When researchers at Columbia University crunched the numbers on six separate studies following dieters on either a smoothie-based plan (one or two smoothies a day) or a reduced-calorie plan, they found that both sets lost weight, but those on the smoothie-based plan experienced “significantly greater weight loss” at both the 3-month and 1-year marks. In a 2015 review of studies on weight-loss plans, researchers at Johns Hopkins reported that participants who used low-calorie meal-replacement drinks like smoothies lost more weight than other dieters over the course of 4 to 6 months.

10 Lbs in 10 days ...

I've never been one to have to worry about my weight. Five foot tall with an athletic build (with little effort), hovering around 100 lbs for forever years. Then menopause hit. Over the last few years, I gained 20 lbs, most of it in my trouble area - the belly. Or so, it seemed. 120 may not seem overweight to some, but as a small boned/framed, petite lady, it was like being pregnant two times over.

A little over four months ago I started to get a grip on it. Never a fan of diets (in theory), I started working out five times a week. A few Leslie Sansone walking videos three times a week and yoga/stretching on alternating weekdays. Since I've never really had to worry about what I ate, I didn't really make any major changes in my diet. It took me two months to snap out of that denial. So, it took me four months to lose 10 lbs.

I was feeling and looking better, but still wanting to get to my goal weight of 100, which is where I feel most comfortable physically. And my belly was still very much my trouble spot. I started losing momentum on the motivation train. After doing some research, I saw that the Zero Belly Smoothies was coming out in a week. David Zinczenko has been in the belly business for years, so of course, I'd heard of his passion and even though, I've never even had a smoothie, I liked the idea of no focused shopping and eating, AND the possibility of losing up to 16 pounds in 14 days.

It worked. Still working out five times a week (nothing hardcore) and replacing breakfast and dinner with Zero Belly Smoothies - eating pretty much what I wanted, yet sensibly, for lunch and on the weekends, I lost 10 lbs in 10 days, and my belly is as flat as its gonna get.

The smoothies are quick, easy and delicious. My energy level is through the roof with out the jitters that comes with caffeine, and for you other meno's out there, the smoothies seem to alleviate other (struggling to lose weight) menopausal symptoms as well. For me specifically, maybe a coincidence, but I've not had any of the leg cramps from hell or scary heart palpitations I used to get prior to the smoothies.

This book is GREAT on my Kindle for PC

PLEASE DISREGARD the one star rating by Devout Patriot. Not sure if they reviewed the right book. This book is GREAT on my Kindle for PC. The opening pages has a great table of contents that is interactive. You can click on the chapter title and it takes you right to that chapter in the book. Are you in the mood for a Green Smoothie? Tap on "Chapter 6" and you're there. Also, the only advertising I have found are three pages where they show companion books - Zero Belly Diet (2 pages) and Zero Belly Cookbook (1 page). There are several chapters before any recipes which discuss many topics..."Busting the Smoothie Myth", "How Zero Belly Smoothies Smooth Out Your Belly", etc. These are very informational. But then there is recipe after recipe, all very nicely grouped into themes...Fruit Smoothies, Green Smoothies, Savory Smoothies, etc. I've been looking for more options for smoothies that doesn't require or recommend a specific product or protein brand, etc.

Tons of great recipes and more.

This book is full of delicious, filling smoothie recipes that will work for anyone. They are all vegan and gluten free. Many of them do use almond mill and/or nut butters, so if you have nut allergies you will have fewer choices. These smoothies are based on the Zero Belly Diet, so if you are on that diet this book will give you a ton more choices for how to do the diet. Also, it contains a pretty good summary of the diet, so you don't have to buy that book first before you can use this book.

About the Author
Clive Orton is Emeritus Professor of Quantitative Archaeology at the University College London Institute of Archaeology. He has won the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society Ralph Merrifield Award for service to London Archaeology and the British Archaeological Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a member of the Archaeology Data Service Management Committee, a member of the advisory board for the Journal of Quantitative Archaeology, the editor of London Archaeologist, a member of the editorial board for Archaeologia e Calcolatori, chairman of Southwark and Lambeth Archaeological Excavation Committee and chair of Gresham Ship Steering Committee. His most recent books include The Pottery from Medieval Novgorod and its Region (2006) and Sampling in Archaeology (2000).

Michael Hughes was Principal Scientific Officer at The British Museum, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research and Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science and Bioscience at the University of East London. His work has been published in Archaeometry, the Journal of Archaeological Science, Studies in Conservation, Medieval Archaeology, Medieval Ceramics and the Oxford Journal of Archaeology, among others.

In the autumn of 1973, the writer Peter Matthiessen set out in the company of zoologist George Schaller on a hike that would take them 250 miles into the heart of the Himalayan region of Dolpo, "the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture on earth." Their voyage was in quest of one of the world's most elusive big cats, the snow leopard of high Asia, a creature so rarely spotted as to be nearly mythical; Schaller was one of only two Westerners known to have seen a snow leopard in the wild since 1950.

Published in 1978, The Snow Leopard is rightly regarded as a classic of modern nature writing. Guiding his readers through steep-walled canyons and over tall mountains, Matthiessen offers a narrative that is shot through with metaphor and mysticism, and his arduous search for the snow leopard becomes a vehicle for reflections on all manner of matters of life and death. In the process, The Snow Leopard evolves from an already exquisite book of natural history and travel into a grand, Buddhist-tinged parable of our search for meaning. By the end of their expedition, having seen wolves, foxes, rare mountain sheep, and other denizens of the Himalayas, and having seen many signs of the snow leopard but not the cat itself, Schaller muses, "We've seen so much, maybe it's better if there are some things that we don't see."

A trip worth taking on many levels

Peter Matthiessen considered himself primarily a fiction writer, though his non-fiction output was nearly twice as heavy. He is the only writer to have won the National Book Award in both categories. Matthiessen, who died in April of this year, was a well-known literary figure, traveler, naturalist, environmentalist, and Buddhist. A couple of his novels, Far Tortuga & Shadow Country, rank in the highest tier of my personal favorites.

The Snow Leopard is a famous book that recounts the author’s 1973 journey to the remote mountains of Nepal with field biologist George Schaller, who went to study the Himalayan blue sheep. Matthiessen went along for several reasons, for the high altitude flora and fauna, the most elusive of which is the snow leopard, and for spiritual reasons having to do with a pilgrimage to the ancient shrine on Crystal Mountain, as well as a more personal quest to understand reality and suffering, prompted by the recent loss of his wife to cancer.

I read this book slowly, partly due to my recent schedule but mainly to savor the words, as seemed best upon my encounter with them. The related journey is a combination of sheer arduous traveling, a Buddhist history of the region, a seeker’s inner path, a traveler’s account of the lives of the people living there, and as usual with this writer, lyrical descriptions of the natural world in its many forms.

Like the mountain journey itself, the passages move up and down with the landscape, changing with the weather and the reader’s mind, finding footholds in different areas of interest, holding true in sparkling moments of transcendence that balance more mundane points in other spots. There are wonderful observations of locals, both human and animal, and the inner struggles of a spiritual man who rises and falls in his attempts at betterment. Written as daily journal entries, the accumulation of the details of hardship and progress and doubt and beauty and loss began to gather within this reader and alter his perceptions in ways both subtle and profound.

In most ways this journey is no longer possible, in all likelihood not politically feasible, while the region itself is no longer as remote as it was forty years ago, not to mention the fact that many readers would not relish or even be capable of the physical demands. Here then is an opportunity to experience something of this incredible undertaking and feel this mystical, ethereal high country – in a staggering and moving accomplishment.

Here are two passages to illustrate the reflective and physical aspects of the journey.

When I watch blue sheep, I must watch blue sheep, not be thinking about sex, danger, or the present, for this present – even while I think of it – is gone.

In the cold wind, the track is icy even at midday, yet one cannot wander to the side without plunging through the crust. The regular slow step that works best on steep mountainsides is difficult; I slip and clamber. Far above, a train of yaks makes dark curves on the shining ice; soon a second herd overtakes me, the twine-soled herders strolling up the icy incline with hands clasped behind their backs, grunting and whistling at the heaving animals.

Look Inward While Looking Outward - A Treatise for Tranquility

Peter Matthiessen died recently but well before his death, "The Snow Leopard" clearly marked a high
point in his long literary career. I stumbled across this epic tale of both inner and outer exploration,
hungrily searching for an explorer that related more than just his physical travails. He offers vivid descriptions
of the mountain world about him, while searching for the elusive snow leopard, and at the same time
provides the reader insights into religion, philosophy and his own personal struggles attempting to balance
the emotional needs of his family and friends while reaching for the joy and peace that only being alone in the
mountains can offer.

So, set aside your iPhones and tablets, leave the hubbub of the city noise and traffic behind, forget for
a few hours the incessant and annoying buzz of social media and read a few chapters of the monumental work.
You will become refreshed and renewed, centered again, perhaps even a new Zen advocate. You owe it to yourself
and, more importantly, you owe it to the memory of Peter Matthiessen.

Much like Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"

The story is extremely well written and is far from a standard adventure drama. It is much more akin to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". It is an intrigue tale of self-discovery using the language and faith practices of the Himalayan cultures the writer travels through to explain his personal progress. Much like Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", the writer's personal journey mirrors the actual journey taken. It was a slow read with deep layering of flora, fauna, geography, history and religion... sometimes just too much. This book is worth the investment, but it is not an entertaining read.
