About the Author

Derek Johnson, named college baseball’s National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2004 and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010, is widely considered one of the top pitching coaches in the country. In October 2012, he accepted a position with the Chicago Cubs as their minor league pitching coordinator. Before his appointment with the Cubs, he spent 11 years as pitching coach at Vanderbilt, three as associate head coach. While at Vanderbilt, four of his last five staffs led the Southeastern Conference in earned-run average (ERA). His staffs were also ranked nationally at number 15 (2003), 7 (2004), 17 (2005), and 13 (2007). More than 25 of Johnson’s past pitchers have been drafted.

Under Johnson’s tutelage, Vanderbilt participated in the College World Series in 2011, led by eight players who would later be selected in the Major League Baseball draft, including first-round picks Sonny Gray and Grayson Gravin. The 2011 pitching team led the Southeastern Conference in ERAs and strikeouts. In 2010, the Commodores allowed the fewest home runs in the league, led by Sonny Gray, who was named Baseball America’s Summer League Player of the Year (the Commodores’ third win in five years). For his efforts with this team, Johnson was named the ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year.

Johnson's 2007 crew led the SEC in eight statistical categories, including ERA (3.55), strikeouts (632), opponents’ batting average (.238), complete games (7), and runs allowed (266). Vanderbilt hurlers also threw a school record 606.2 innings in 67 games with 13 saves. Six pitchers from that 2007 staff were drafted and signed into the professional ranks, led by number-one overall pick David Price (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) and the eighth overall pick, Casey Weathers (Colorado Rockies).

Johnson lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

This book had that more up to date feeling than others. It was very easy to read with clear instructions. The DVD that came with it made things even easier. If you have a first time pitcher then this book is a must.

A great resource for pitching information

Derek Johnson's "Complete Guide to Pitching" is a great blend of the latest information mixed with a common sense approach to pitching. His delivery is excellent as he takes several complex ideas and presents them in a manner that is easily understood. The use of the "quick pitch" and "pen session" side bars are an excellent tool to help further simplify the ideas being conveyed. The Complete Guide to Pitching is the most comprehensive book available on pitching today. It is a must read for coaches working with pitchers of all ages. As a Division One NCAA head coach, this book will certainly be a great resource for me in developing our pitchers.

About the Author
John I. Ingle, DDS, is a pioneer in the field of endodontics and has served as an educator and mentor to generations of endodontists. Now retired, he has been an international lecturer, professor and department chair of periodontics and endodontics at the University of Washington, Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, and he also served the Institute of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was president of Palm Springs Seminars, a leading institutions of dental continuing education.

Dr. Ingle is also a past President of the American Association of Endodontists, and the AAE awarded him the Ralph F. Sommer Award and the Edgar D. Coolidge Award. In 2001 he was inducted into the USC School of Dentistry s Hall of Fame.

Ilan Rotstein, DDS, is Associate Dean of Continuing Education at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as Chair of the Division of Endodontics, Orthodontics and General Practice Residency.

About the Author
Terry Harrison grew up in Norfolk. His early art education was basic and he never dreamed that he would become an artist. At fifteen, Terry moved to Hampshire and was inspired by a brilliant art teacher. He took O and A levels in art, then won a place at Farnham Art School at the age of sixteen. He became a graphic artist, but continued to paint in his spare time. In 1984 Terry gave up his job to paint full time. He demonstrates to artists' groups and teaches on painting holidays. He has also developed a range of his own brushes and paints. He is the author of many best selling books on painting with acrylics and watercolors. Terry now lives in the Cotswolds. Not too keen on this

I don't know if it was the class or the text that made me dislike this subject. This subject seems to be in place because people are forgetting how to be professional and writing memos with "instant messenger" style grammar. Maybe this text book will help the new generation become more professional, or maybe it was a complete waste of my money.

This is a "Must Have" text. If your course requires this text, don't rent it. Definitely buy it. The resources alone are worth the price.

Excellent Condition, Came in a Timely Manner

I ordered two copies of this book on a Monday and by Thursday the box containing them was on my doorstep. I skimmed through the pages, and did not see any writing or highlighting despite the "used" condition. The only evidence that the books may have been used before is some very light marks on the cover and a slight bending of the bottom right corner. The price was certainly right as well -- in my school's bookstore, the books were over $160 apiece, and the used copies here were just about $20 each. Great price, great condition, and great shipping time. I definitely would recommend getting the book on Amazon.

Wow, I have never been so disappointed...

I don't normally write reviews for books but this was just inexcusable. I (a medical student) was using this book to study for my shelf exam in surgery and I couldn't believe how many mistakes there were in the answers section! Many of the explanations of the questions would clearly seem to say that the answer was, for example, (A) but then the answer listed would be (D). I assume these were all printing errors or something like that. Don't get me wrong, the explanations in this book are great and really helped, but it ended up taking me much longer than expected to go through the answers because I would really have to spend some time figuring out which answer was the REAL answer according to the explanation. And actually there was one explanation that was as far as I know completely wrong, but that may just be due to an outdated question.

In summary, really, with this being the 10th edition of Pretest Surgery, the number of errors in the answer section is really inexcusable. The book did help but I am sure there are other question books out there that may be better. While I generally like the pretest series, I would recommend waiting for the 11th Edition or get another book in this case. Using this book was just plain too annoying.

Look for new interactive palm version

Pretest now has standalone programs of the books (not the cumbersome pdf files). It is interactive in that it lets you choose your answer and gives you immediate feedback with right and wrong choices (no need flipping through pages), allows you to review missed answers, randomize questions and answer choices. Basically, it's a lot like qbank for third year. I used the palm version for surgery and loved it because I always had my palm with me and could do questions while I was waiting for an attending to finally scrub into a case. You'd be surprised at how small little bits of time add up! I finished pretest while only doing questions at the hospital in less than two weeks.

Too detailed of questions, but the explanations atone for it

Although the questions sometimes get too detailed for purposes of Step 2 - type exams, the explanations are excellent and tend to cover more basic facts. This atones for the occasional question that states, "current research states ..." and puts it in the grasp of most medical students. This is a good book to cover (or at least sample) if you are taking NBMLE shelf exams.
