A Good And Much-Needed Work On Polio

I lived in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas as a child and adolescent from 1947 to 1958. Polio outbreaks were frightening annual events,
Ms Wooten's book is a thorough treatment of the many facets of polio outbreaks in Texas.

I had to smile about the reference to some people not wanting to speak on the telephone because they thought polio could be spread over telephone lines. I remember hearing that a few times

The interview with Gene Nelson was touching for me. I knew him as a High School Choir director in Edinburg. Although not treated in the book, I am still touched by the care and devotion that "Prof" Palmer of Mcallen showed for his beloved wife, who lived at home in an Iron Lung.

A minor disappointment for me was that the author seems to dwell heavily on West Texas sources, when the most severe outbreaks were in other locales. Also it would have been good if the Texas Lions Camp For Crippled Children in Kerrville had been mentioned.

Heather has written a book that is well researched and has many interview records with people who weathered the effects of the disease themselves or helped a child or other relative to recover.
Our eldest daughter contracted polio when she was five years old and unlike some parents I was able to stay with her during her time in isolation. This was in January of 1950 and a hospital in Beaumont, TX was in the process of opening a designated ward for polio patients. She and I spent three weeks alone on an otherwise vacant floor. The therapist who was to begin treatments was contacted and arrived expeditiously. There was the huge Hubbard Tub for the water therapy and the agonizing hot packs which were a part of the therapy at that time.
Later funds for March of Dimes were low, our insurance had been used to the limit, and her grandfather who had had polio when he was twelve (about 1900) sent supplemental funds to help cover expenses. I became the care taker at home who gave the painful exercises to my child and she saw the therapist at intervals for evaluation. After several months the stiffness gradually was worked out of all areas except her left leg. Several surgeries followed at growth intervals to enable the growth and use of the leg. Over the years I have been rewarded by hearing her tell someone what her mother had helped to accomplish during her recovery.

Interesting history

This isn't exactly a page turner, but a good compilation of a very scary time in our history. I was a little kid back then, born in 1952 and my parents must have been very afraid. I remember my mom working on one of the March of Dimes' Mother's Marches. And I remember standing in line in a school cafeteria to get my vaccine shot, seeing stories of kids in iron lungs on the news. And getting the sugar cube vaccine a few years later. I lived in CA and had no idea it was so bad in TX, where I moved later on for high school. If you love to read history, this is a good book.

As gimmicks go, it’s a good one: each month of 2010, one title in the 12-book Conspiracy 365 series will be released. The ticking clock (or calendar, in this case) is introduced immediately when a strange man accosts 15-year-old Callum Ormond on the street, shouting, “Get away! Hide and lay low until midnight December 31st of next year.” It’s good advice, because the following day, January 1st, includes a boat wreck, shark attack, and helicopter rescue—and that’s just for starters. Soon Callum is fleeing unknown assailants who are framing him for the attack of his little sister and uncle Rafe (a shady character himself). It all has to do with something called the Ormond Singularity and a group of sketches Callum’s father gave him before dying of a mysterious illness. This is the kind of stuff that stretches credibility with every page, but continual time updates (“12:00 a.m.,” “12:13 a.m.,” etc.) at least create a sense of continual motion. The conclusion offers no answers, just the requisite cliff-hanger. Grades 4-6. --Daniel Kraus

On December 31st, fifteen year old Callum Ormond heard his
name being called by a stranger he didn't even know.
Before he could run away he shouts out to him "They
killed your father. They're killing me! You must go into
hiding until December 31st next year." After hearing
those devastating words, he must uncover the mysterious
history of his family and do so by using the few clues his
father left behind. Now being framed for a crime he didn't
commit, Callum is the most wanted fugitive and not just by
the authorities. While Callum races against time to
uncover the secret, he must also be aware of the people
who are willing to get to him by any means necessary. Will
Callum uncover the dark secret which his father died over?
Will he even survive the next 365 days?

Wow.. that's all I pretty much have to say about this book!
It got directly to the point at the beginning, and it started picking up
pace immediately. It sort of reminded me of a Bourne
Identity, but the story is totally different. It was
definitely a quick read because it only took me a couple
of hours to read, but it sure keeps you on the edge of
your seat. I definitely think this book is a best seller
series in the making, and anyone who likes books with tons
of action and a mysterious twist to it will really enjoy
Conspiracy 365. I would recommend this for ages 12 and
up.

Serial novel for teens

Although Kane/Miller Publishers are very familiar to me for some of the wonderful and unique picture books they have imported from around the globe, I was completely surprised by the content and concept of this new series. So many books leave you begging for more, but the publishers haven't so cleverly set up a monthly release date for a 12-book series as Kane/Miller has. A teen's "24' (television show), I love the idea of a serial book or novel, which is actually not a `novel' idea. According to Wikipedia, many of Charles Dickens' novels were published as serial installments in a magazine.

Although some of the drama was a bit too far-fetched to be believed, this book was hard to put down. You also have to be a diligent reader because, being a serial in nature, there will not be any tidy ending until the last installment in December 2010. But, I look forward to seeing if this series can sustain the momentum.

And, as with all of the latest chapter books, it has its own website. Unfortunately, all contests are for Australia and New Zealand residents only, but the site content is available for everyone.

Twisted and Driven

Author Gabrielle Lord has set quite a task for herself: she has to write 12 fantastic action novels for teens during 2010. That's one a month, and they're all part of a huge conspiracy novel that has multiple parts, secrets, betrayals, treachery, and one mystery after another. The series is being billed as a 24 for teens.

The first novel, Conspiracy 365 January, starts out with a bang. Fifteen year old Callum Ormond `s life is in constant jeopardy, first from a storm, then a life jacket that doesn't function right, and finally by sharks that circle him and attack.

And that's just the opening chapter, folks. After that, things turn wicked. Callum's father is dead, passing away after a lingering illness that mentally drained him. At the end of his days, Callum's father was tied to a bed, watched over constantly, and spent his lucid moments drawing sketches that no one understands and everyone seems to want. Man, I was totally sucked in by everything Callum's facing, and I know he's not going to catch a decent break the rest of the year. Just like Jack Bauer has those incredibly long days.

Callum finds out about the sketches, but before he can get his hands on them, his Uncle Rafe manages to get away with them. Since it was Uncle Rafe that got their boat into trouble in the storm, I didn't like the guy from the get-go, but things get worse the more Callum explores. Even though Uncle Rafe is his father's twin, the two of them couldn't be more different.

After figuring out that his uncle knows more about the "Ormond Singularity" (whatever that is) than Callum does, our hero tries to outwit his uncle. Unfortunately, his dastardly uncle isn't the only one searching for the secrets Callum's father left behind.

Once Rafe ended up getting shot with his own gun and Callum's little sister ends up in a coma, I knew things were about to turn worse. In no time at all, Callum is the most wanted young fugitive around - and wanted by just the police. His mysterious enemies are closing in as well.

Through it all, though, Callum's good friend and electronic wizard Boges hangs with him. I like the friendship the two have, but the pacing is just too tightly constructed to show much of it. Still, there are eleven books to go.

The books are very stylistic as well. Chapters cover the days, sometimes only a page long, and sometimes they mark the passage of a few days. The individual chapters are also broken down by time stamps that keep the clock ticking for the reader. Another interesting twist on the book is that the pages are numbered backward, so you're always reading down to page 1. The device has been done before, but I doubt today's young readers have seen it, or that they will be any less intrigued by it than I was the first time I saw it done.

The book is incredibly fast-paced, so even reluctant readers and boys who'd generally rather play video games will probably get sucked up into the story. Plus, with one coming out every month, they won't have long to wait before another novel shows up.

If Callum survives. The last time I saw him, he was trapped in a barrel that was filling up with oil!

greed or temptation too great to resist

James Morton and Susanna Lobez have written a number of Australian true crime books together now, many of which are in anecdotal format. Whilst BENT tends towards that style again, it is considerably more detailed and employs a much clearer narrative connection than many of the earlier books this reviewer has read. As a result of this, it's a much stronger, considerably more informative read than originally expected.

Even when you realise that there's been an extensive culture of corruption throughout not just the Police in Australia since First Fleet Days, BENT really brings home how extensive, how protected and how blatant much of the corruption has been. Not just in the obvious locations such as Queensland in the Bjelke-Petersen era, and the NSW car crash of around the same time. The levels of corruption, and the length of time it was allowed to go on may have varied slightly state to state, but it is rather sobering to think that it's basically been everywhere. Whether it's disaffection, greed or temptation too great to resist, the thin line between the cops and crooks attempting to influence seems to be paper thin. Not helped by the witch hunts launched against so called whistleblowers (who let's face it are the ones who are attempting to do the right thing - yet we stigmatise / label...). What comes through so clearly is the need for leadership, supervision, guidance and intervention. Much of which is often missing, much of which seems to have been corrupted first.

BENT was fascinating and quite compelling reading. It's not a heavy academic treatise on the cause and affect, and likely ways of avoiding all corruption, but it does clarify a lot of intricacies and it certainly gives the reader a picture of the spread of the problem. And this time, because it's less choppy, and more structured and targeted it's extremely readable.

BENT leaves you considering the possible outcomes had the amount of effort, and the level of organisation that has been put into the crime side of the "policing" environments, had gone to actual crime solving.

I found these CD-s very inspirational. The material is presented a way that is not only interesting but, also funny at times. I listened to them over and over since I've got them and every time I seem to learn something from them that is worth to think about and to apply. I'd recommend this CD series to absolutely anyone. It is shown how data can be downloaded and then imported into MATLAB for analysis by techniques covered in the text. Applications include data analysis in the presense of noise, with the focus on filtering noisy signals and the use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to extract the dominant cyclic components of a signal (time series) from noisy measurements of the signal.

Very Dissapointed

The information in this book is difficult enough to learn, and the way it is presented here compounds the problem.

The Information and examples are not explained thoroughly or completely (to compressed) can be very over whelming.

There are many practice problems at the end of each chapter (great) there is one problem ...there are no ANSWERS???. I was not able to find a solutions manual. I even emailed the author (I got no reply). Very difficult to know if your solving the Practice Problems correctly if you don't have any solved practice prolems let alone any answers. I did manage to pick up some of what the author was trying to say, but i had to read each chapter numerous times. The website referred to in the book has a few solved example problems for each chapter, but many are hand written and could not be interpreted. In all honesty I was using this book in conjunction with a self study coarse and did not have the benefit of an instructor.I would not reccomend using this book alone,when trying to grasp this subject.

Plain Language a Plus -- But Doesn't Go Enough Into Detail

The fact that this book is written in plain language is great, it makes a lot of concepts a lot easier to digest. However, the material here is extremely patchy. As a student learning this for the first time, I've found that this textbook isn't exactly the most effective due to the holes between content areas. The author seems to go into detail about things that seem unimportant, while he/she skims over the real meat of the subject. And what's worse is the fact that there are no worked out examples. If there were more worked examples, concepts might click amongst the patchy conceptual explanations. There is MATLAB scattered throughout the text, which I've found useful at times, but it too is not explained well-enough. All in all, this is not a text that I recommend to those in their introductory signal processing courses, rather, I recommend this text to those who have already taken introductory signal processing classes and are in need of a review text. As a review for those already in the know, this text seems great.

This book would be excellent for someone who is already familiar with signals but is not good for the student who is learning the topic. Very few examples and no student solutions manual makes it a hard sell. For those after theory only.
